Davante Adams Released by the NY Jets – Why did the Jets let go of Davante Adams?

Eric Divakaran

The New York Jets have let go of veteran wide receiver Davante Adams as per Ian Rapaport. Adams will once again be looking for a new home after a very short tenure with the Jets. He was traded midway through the Las Vegas Raiders to the New York Jets last season in 2024, and only played 11 games for the Jets.

The move comes after the Jets’ failure to move Adams despite trying to find a trade partner. The Jets had acquired Adams for a third round pick in October of 2024 and it reunited him with his former teammate, Aaron Rodgers who he played with for 8 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Even though they acquired a great QB and a great WR, the Jets finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, sitting third in the AFC East and not even sniffing the playoffs. This led to the franchise making major moves in the off-season and the biggest of them all was letting go of Aaron Rodgers and they told him that they’re ‘moving on’ from him. After Rodgers, it seems Adams was next in line.

Despite moving around in the 2024 season, Adams still finished the season strong with 1063 receiving yards, 85 receptions, 8 touchdowns, and played a total of 14 games (11 for the Jets and 3 for the Raiders).

Adams has never been a free agent before and this is his chance to land himself to a championship contending team. His friendship with Rodgers is still as strong as ever and another possibility is that the two could reunite somewhere else.

Why are the Jets letting go of Adams?

After a disappointing season in 2024, the Jets are trying to do everything they can to become a better team by making some changes in their roster. Now that they have released Adams, the Jets will save $29.9 million in salary cap. Adams was set to earn $35.64 million as his base salary, each of the next two seasons but he had no guaranteed money remaining on his contract.

Releasing Adams has given the Jets some more flexibility and they could add an essential player that they want or need later on.

Top-5 destinations for Davante Adams

There are many teams across the NFL that could use a receiver likes Adams but in our opinion, these are the top-5 teams that Adams should definitely look out for;

  • Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers and their head coach Jim Harbaugh know that there may not be too many quality receivers that’ll be available in the offseason. The team will definitely be searching for a wideout in the offseason and Adams could be the perfect fit. After all, the Chargers need a receiver more than anybody else in the NFL.
  • New England Patriots: Patriots’ may have a future superstar QB in Drake Maye who showed a lot of potential last season. Adding a player like Adams could open up a lot of possibilities for the Patriots and their QB. Maye needs help in New England and there’s nobody better than adding Adams who’s a quality wideout.
  • Green Bay Packers: With Jordan Love as the primary QB now, Adams could return to where it all started for him. The Packers are a young team and adding a quality veteran player could only do them good.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs have some good quality receivers already but they could replace DeAndre Hopkins with Adams as Hopkins struggled throughout the playoffs and barely had any good games in the regular season. Between the two, Adams is the better receiver right now and the Chiefs should try to add him to the roster. Especially since the Chiefs’ offense looked lifeless in the Super Bowl.
  • Washington Commanders: Even though the Commanders already added Deebo Samuel recently, adding another dangerous weapon in Adams would not hurt them at all. The Commanders have the cap space, so why not get another quality receiver? An offense with Terry McLaurin, Davante Adams, Jayden Daniels, and Deebo Samuel? That could fill up a lot of holes that they had in the offense last season.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
