Can Medvedev prove his grass court prowess?
No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev opens his account at the 2025 Terra Wortmann Open in Halle against home favourite Daniel Altmaier. The Russian is playing his second tournament in the build-up to Wimbledon. On the other hand, Altmaier will be opening his grass court account on Monday.
Medvedev and Altmaier will clash for the first time in their respective careers on Monday. The Round of 32 encounter will take place at the OWL Arena. Medvedev is suffering from an average 2025 campaign so far, failing to capture a championship thus far. He has attained a 19-12 win-loss record, and lost in the quarterfinal stage of his last tournament to Reilly Opelka. A semifinal finish at Indian Wells and the Open-13 happen to be his season-best performances.
Altmaier is entering Halle on the back of an excellent Round of 16 run at the French Open. The German sensation reached back-to-back quarterfinals in February at the Rotterdam Open and Open-13, and consecutive Round of 16s at Monte Carlo and Munich. At the age of 26, he is on the verge of re-entering the Top-50 of the ATP Rankings.
The only encounter between Medvedev and Altmaier came at the Switzerland F2 event way back in 2016. While it does not count in their professional head to head record, the 29-year-old former World No. 1 won 6-2 2-6 6-4 on the indoor carpet courts in Europe.

Medvedev played a solid level of tennis at the Libema Open last week. Unfortunately, he was out-served by Opelka. It doesn’t seem likely that Altmaier will generate the weapons to threaten his Russian counterpart on Monday. The German requires time to assert his dominance on the game, and assistance from the surface – neither of which he will receive.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
