Former World No. 1 is yet to reach a final in 2025.
After a narrow victory against Karen Khachanov, ninth seed Daniil Medvedev returns to Court Rainier III on Wednesday at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters. He will take on Frenchman Alexandre Muller, who came through 6-4 6-4 against Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the Round of 64. The winner of this match faces either Alex De Minaur or Tomas Machac in the Round of 16.
Former World No. 1 Daniil Mededev has seen a steep decline in rankings, owing to a rough 2025 season so far. A six-time Grand Slam finalist, it all went downhill when the 29-year-old lost a thrilling Round-2 to Learner Tien at the 2025 Australian Open. He has made a couple of semifinals, but hasn’t been able to cross the hurdle into the summit clash.

The clay court season started early for Alexandre Muller, as he reached the quarterfinal at the Grand Prix Hassan II last week. Despite losing to Kamil Majchrzak in a close battle, he displayed a great level of tennis. Muller’s best result of the season was in Hong Kong – beating Kei Nishikori to start his year with a title. The World No. 39 also performed exceedingly well in Rio, where he lost in the final vs Sebastian Baez.
Daniil Medvedev has won the only previous match-up against Alexandre Muller, and currently leads the head to head 1-0.
Medvedev beat Muller in the Wimbledon 2024 Second Round, in four sets. However, the Monte Carlo meeting will be on a completely different surface and altered conditions. The Russian may find it harder to get over the line – against Khachanov, he took a convincing 5-1 lead before capitulating. In the end, it was his experience that took him through.

The odds are firmly in favour of the Russian superstar ahead of this Round of 32 match. He is coming off a confidence boosting victory, and has the experience over his 28-year-old opponent. Expect some good serving and slice drop shots from Medvedev as he looks to book his spot in the last 16 at the Principality.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Daniil Medvedev Win: 4/9
Alexandre Muller Win: 15/8
