Ruud is yet to win a title in 2025.
World No. 7 Casper Ruud opens his 2025 Monte Carlo Masters campaign with a tricky Round-2 encounter against Roberto Bautista Agut on Wednesday. The gritty Spaniard is a force to be reckoned with on clay, and has toppled many seeds in the past. A former Top-10 player himself, this promises to be an entertaining clash on Court des Princes.
Seeded fourth in Monte Carlo, Casper Ruud is back on his strongest surface. He has displayed a whole range of virtuoso performances over the past couple of years – earning him two Roland Garros finalist trophies in the past three years. Despite showing promise by reaching the final in Dallas, Ruud’s poor showing in the Sunshine Double events has resulted in a poor start to 2025. The Norwegian now turns to the red dirt for some recovery.
With a bitter-sweet 6-6 record on clay over the past year, not many people will favour Roberto Bautista Agut when he takes to court. Yet, he has won almost 75% clay court points on serve since 2024, and has a superior head to head record against Ruud to back it up. RBA’s best outings in 2025 have been a pair of last 16 qualifications – in Dubai and Bucharest.
Roberto Bautista Agut leads the head to head face-off against Casper Ruud by 3-1. Their last meeting was in 2024.
Casper Ruud and Roberto Bautista Agut have faced each other on four occasions – three times on hard courts, and once on clay. Their previous clay court battle was way back in 2018 – when the now 36-year-old dominated his 26-year-old counterpart. The three-time Grand Slam finalist’s solitary victory came at the Canada Masters when he edged out an absolute nail-biter.

When two veterans of the hallowed clay lock horns, it is bound to be a memorable tussle. Keeping the pre-match rankings aside, this is an even match-up between quality fighters. We don’t expect anything short of a humdinger, with the Norwegian possibly edging out his Spanish senior. But don’t be surprised if the seeds continue to tumble in the Principality.
Prediction: Casper Ruud in three sets.
