It was a Sunday morning in India when my phone buzzed. A notification from Shams. Another trade, I thought. Just another standard post, probably some role player moving. But then I opened it, and everything stopped. Luka Doncic. Traded to the LA Lakers.
Wait, what?
For Anthony Davis.
Excuse me?
I stared at the screen in disbelief. This couldn’t be right. Millions of people probably had the same thought, I am sure Shams’ account got hacked. This was no ordinary trade. Luka, the face of the Mavericks, was suddenly gone. Just like that.
It wasn’t just a trade. It felt like the Mavs ripped the heart out of their fanbase, like someone dumping their high school sweetheart for a 2029 prom date.
It’s hard to forget the love affair Dallas had with Luka. The locals treated him like royalty. Mark Cuban, who is now a minority owner, once claimed that he would rather divorce his wife than trading Luka.
Fast forward to today, with the ownership transfer, it feels like Luka was practically served up as alimony.

What makes this trade even more striking is the manner in which it was kept secret.
Outside of Mavs GM Nico Harrison and the Adelson family, who hold majority ownership, no one had a clue this deal was brewing behind closed doors. Not Luka, not the coaching staff, not the players – absolutely no one.
That’s not just a bad look, it makes you wonder, was this more about dollars and cents than winning basketball?
For years, Dallas searched for a player to define the team’s identity. They found it in Dirk Nowitzki, and soon after, in Luka Doncic. But now, it’s time for them to start over.
Some are saying it’s time for Mavs fans to move on. After all, Luka made his debut for the Lakers this week, and the Dallas should be able to turn the page, right? I mean, it’s the NBA. Players come and go. But here’s the question: has the Mavericks front office really moved on?

It doesn’t look like it. If anyone still had doubts about the mess inside the Mavs’ organization, Anthony Davis’ debut on Monday was a wake-up call. Reports have surfaced that the trade’s masterminds knew about Anthony’s injury during the trade physical but went ahead. He got injured in his first game, which now, as reports suggest, could be a season ending injury.
And as if things weren’t already weird enough, Jason Kidd skipped the post-game press conference after Monday’s overtime loss to the Kings which has never happened in the league in the last decade.
So here we are, folks. The Mavs are in a tailspin. Luka is in LA and Kidd is either too mad or too lost to talk to the media. A team which a year back were a title challengers is now in limbo.
But hey, maybe they know something we don’t. Maybe this is their grand plan. But as of now, all I see is a team that tried to cut corners, only to find out they have probably just set the clock back a decade.
The Dallas Mavericks may be starting over, but the truth is, they might not have moved on at all.
