Dallas Stars Secure Forward Oskar Bäck with Two-Year Extension

The Dallas Stars announced Thursday that they have extended center Oskar Back for two years at $1.65MM. The 24-year-old was set to turn into a Group VI unrestricted free agent at the season’s conclusion and, having signed a one-year agreement to stay within the Stars system last summer, became eligible to sign an extension just yesterday.

Back has had a long journey to relevance since being selected by Dallas in the third round of the 2018 draft. After playing his first three seasons post-draft in his home country of Sweden, he signed his entry-level contract with the Stars in April 2021, just one year before his exclusive signing rights were due to lapse.

Back remained throughout his initial contract in the AHL, where he gradually increased his offensive output, ultimately becoming one of the Baby Stars’ top two-way forwards. He recorded 19 goals, 69 assists, and 88 points in 196 games, achieving a +29 rating throughout his three years in the minors, with a personal best of 36 points in 59 games in the 2023-24 season.

As Dallas explores affordable choices within their bottom-six forward group, they signed Back to a two-way contract in June to prevent him from entering the restricted free-agent market. A solid training camp allowed him to bypass waivers and secure a spot on the Stars’ opening-night lineup. He has participated in 31 of Dallas’ 36 games and has not been a healthy scratch since early November.

Back has proven to be a solid fourth-line contributor in his initial NHL appearance. He has one goal and eight assists for nine points, along with a +4 rating, while averaging 11:17 of ice time per game and winning 55.6% of his faceoffs. Despite his 6’4″, 203-lb physique, he hasn’t been very physical, registering just 13 hits.
