Cristian Romero Named Tottenham Captain by Thomas Frank

Cristian Romero has officially been appointed Tottenham Hotspur’s new captain by manager Thomas Frank, following the departure of Heung-Min Son.

The Argentine defender, known as ‘Cuti’, had served as vice-captain alongside James Maddison since August 2023 and will now wear the armband for the 2025/26 season. Frank also confirmed that a leadership group will be formed after the summer transfer window closes, aiming to have multiple leaders within the squad.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash against PSG in Udine, Frank said:

“I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he’s going to be our captain. He was very honoured and happy about it. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward, and off the pitch he’s always pushing the team.”

Romero with his Leadership and Impact

World Cup winner Romero, 27, joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 after being named Serie A’s ‘Best Defender’ in the 2020/21 season. Since then, he has made 124 appearances in all competitions, including 100 in the Premier League.

His partnership with Micky van de Ven at the heart of the defence was instrumental in Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League triumph last season. Frank highlighted Romero’s intensity, commitment, and influence as reasons for his appointment, stressing that the Argentine embodies the mentality required to lead the club forward.

The new captaincy marks another milestone in Romero’s Tottenham career, as he prepares to lead the team out for the Super Cup final and the challenges of the upcoming season.
