Atletico Madrid are reportedly preparing to launch a renewed move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, with the Argentine centre-back expected to turn down a contract extension offer from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. The Spanish giants are stepping up their pursuit of the World Cup-winning defender, who has become one of Diego Simeone’s top priorities in the summer transfer window.
Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, has emerged as a key figure at the back for both club and country. However, with Tottenham looking to extend his stay with a lucrative new contract, reports suggest that the 26-year-old is set to reject the offer. The Argentine appears increasingly open to a new challenge, with Atletico Madrid waiting in the wings.
Diego Simeone is determined to reinforce his defence ahead of the new campaign and views Romero as a perfect fit for his system. Atletico Madrid are understood to have prepared an offer of €55 million plus €10 million in performance-related bonuses. The Spanish club is also reportedly open to raising the bonus figure by an additional €5 million if required to convince Spurs to negotiate.
However, securing the defender will not be straightforward. Tottenham are believed to value Romero at around €82 million (£70m/$96m), and Levy is known for being a tough negotiator, especially when it comes to prized assets. While Romero’s contract situation could force Spurs’ hand, the North London club are under no immediate pressure to sell unless the player pushes for a move.
For Atletico Madrid, the potential arrival of Romero would significantly strengthen a backline that struggled with inconsistency last season. His aggressive defensive style, leadership qualities, and familiarity with La Liga from his time in Spain with Real Betis and previously on the radar at Atleti, make him an attractive long-term investment.
As the summer window progresses, much will depend on Romero’s own stance and whether Spurs are willing to lower their valuation. If a deal is struck, it could be one of the most high-profile defensive transfers of the window.
