Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers’ Historic Performance against the Bengals Lands Him in the Record Books

Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals already had an intriguing storyline all week prior to the start of the game. Both teams competing in two of the toughest divisions in the NFL were going to play with backup quarterbacks under center.

And while this was the talk of the town leading up to the matchup, on the field, it was Vikings’ cornerback Isaiah Rodgers who stole the show. Rodgers’ outstanding defensive performance not only put Minnesota on the front foot, but it also landed him in the record books.

Isaiah Rodgers’ Defensive Masterclass

The Vikings’ cornerback started with a pick 6, then followed it up with a fumble recovery, which he housed to the endzone, and then forced one more fumble after that. This was the first time in the history of the NFL that one player had two defensive touchdowns.

In yesterday’s game against the Bengals, Rodgers’ dominant defensive performance started in the first quarter with the Vikings up 7-0. With Cincinnati marching down the field inside the Vikings’ 30-yard line, quarterback Jake Browning stepped into a throw that got tipped by safety Harrison Smith and found its way into Rodgers’ hands, who returned it for a touchdown.

Then, in the second quarter, with the Vikings up 17-0 under 5 minutes left in the half, Rodgers broke up a pass in the endzone that would have otherwise earned the Bengals 6 points. But there was more, as Browning threw a pass to tight end Noah Fant, and while he was running for further yards after the catch, Rodgers punched the ball out, recovered the fumble, and took it back 66 yards for his second defensive touchdown in the same half.

And if that was not enough, two plays later, Rodgers was once again involved in a crucial play. Browning’s pass was caught by Ja’Marr Chase, but Rodgers once again punched the ball out from behind, which was recovered by teammate Jeff Okudah.

In the end, the former 6th-round pick from the 2020 NFL draft finished with 2 defensive touchdowns and 2 forced fumbles, along with a crucial pass deflection, and 3 tackles in the game. In the process, he earned the highest overall PFF grade in NFL history, which was a perfect 99.9.

Yesterday’s defensive performance by Rodgers was just a reminder to teams that Minnesota possesses a truly solid defense, and if their offense can find a way to build momentum, the Vikings could very well be a tough team to match up against this season. The Vikings will now play their next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.
