Copa del Rey 2024-25 – List of Copa del Rey Winners Over the Years

Moumita Dutta

Barcelona and Real Madrid Are Not the Only Clubs To Have Dominated Copa del Rey Over the Years.

The 2024-25 season is nearing its end along with the Copa del Rey which is set to fold up by the end of this month. Real Madrid have already qualified for the final. Now, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona will fight it out at Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium to secure their spot in the final.

It was an absolutely thrilling affair in the first leg match where Atletico and Barca ended the match at a 4-4 draw. Real Madrid replicated that in their second leg against Real Sociedad with their own 4-4 draw. Having a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Los Blancos squeezed past La Real.

It is anyone’s game in the semi-final second leg for Atleti and Barca. Playing the match at home, which is a fortress for Atleti this season, it almost seems impossible to win for any club. Whereas, Barca managed to win by a 2-4 margin already at Metropolitano only a few weeks ago. Hence, this will certainly be a thrilling match while neutral fans are hoping to see another El Clasico in the final.

List of Copa del Rey Winners

Barcelona are the most successful club in the competition with a total of 31 trophies so far. While one may think that Real Madrid would be the club trailing them, but Los Blancos are third in line with 20 trophies to their names. Athletic Bilbao have the second most number of Copa del Rey titles with 24 trophies.

Even though Barcelona are the most successful, they haven’t been in the final of the competition in the last three years. In the 2020-21 season, Barcelona along with Athletic Bilbao qualified for the final and La Blaugrana won it as well.

Unforgettable Winning Streaks in the Copa del Rey

The three teams who have been the most successful in the history of the competition are also the ones who have the longest title streaks. Since the inception of the competition back in 1903, the first team that dominated the competition was Real Madrid.

  • Barcelona (2014-2018)
  • Athletic Bilbao (1930-1933)
  • Real Madrid (1905-1908)

Los Blancos began their streak winning 1-0 8! the 1905-06 season against Athletic Bilbao. They kept on going for three years, defeating Athletic Bilbao again the next season, then defeating Bizcaya and Real Vigo Sporting in the next years.

Athletic Bilbao began their streak with a revenge 3-2 win against Los Blancos in the 1930-31 season. They ended their streak winning against Los Blancos as well in the 1933-34 season. They won the two years between them by defeating Real Betis and Barcelona.

Barcelona’s streak began quite recently after the arrival of Luis Suarez and the formation of the trio in their attack – Neymar, Messi, and Suarez. In their dominating years, they started their streak by defeating Athletic Bilbao. Then went on to win the trophy three more times against Sevilla (twice) and Alaves (once).

Eventually, I realized I could combine my passion for writing with my love for football, and I’ve never looked back. My favorite part of the job is everything—when you’re doing what you love, even a late-night deadline feels like extra time in a thrilling cup final. Lastly, Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
