Commanders Put RB Brian Robinson Jr on Trade Block – Who Could Be Interested?

Rookie seventh-round Croskey-Merritt's excellent training camp may have prompted Commanders to explore Robinson Jr. trade

As per the latest development out of Washington, NFL insider Jordan Schultz has reported that the Commanders are looking to trade running back Brian Robinson Jr.

While no teams have been mentioned by Schultz, sources indicate that the Commanders are impressed with their depth and could ship Robinson for the right price.

Brian Robinson Jr with the Commanders

Running back Brian Robinson Jr. was selected by the Commanders in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. The former Alabama Crimson Tide back is now entering the final year of his 4-year rookie contract.

He has been a consistent 7-plus yard rusher over his three seasons in Washington. As a rookie, Robinson rushed for 797 yards in 12 games. In 2023 and 2024, he rushed for 733 and 789 yards, respectively, averaging 4.1 yards per carry.

Potential Landing Spots

The Commanders could be seeking a potential trade for Robinson following the exceptional training camp performances from seventh-round rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, in addition to roster depth that includes Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr.

With McNichols and Rodriguez also providing capable backups and Ekeler providing a different use schematically, the Commanders could look to trade Robinson for future draft capital. Here are some potential trade options for Robinson.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers could be a possible landing spot, considering much of their ground game rests on the health of Christian McCaffrey. When healthy, McCaffrey is more than capable of taking over games, but injuries can be a factor, as witnessed last season.

Moreover, backup running backs Isaac Guerendo and rookie Jordan James are also nursing injuries. Adding Robinson to the running back room could provide the 49ers with added depth and a complementary piece to McCaffrey.

Houston Texans

Houton’s top two running backs currently are Joe Mixon and Nick Chubb. Mixon is currently dealing with a foot injury, and he is still doubtful to return for the start of the regular season. If Mixon’s return is postponed, perhaps the Texans would do well to add Robinson to the mix.

As for Chubb, Houston signed him as a free agent this offseason, but he is still recovering from a knee injury that limited him to a career-worst 3.3 yards per carry in 2024. The next best option for the Texans is Dameon Pierce, but he hasn’t done much over the past couple of seasons.

Dallas Cowboys

A trade that would be quite difficult to pull off, considering both teams are NFC East rivals. Nevertheless, the Cowboys need to get a rushing game going this season, and there is sufficient doubt that the top pair of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders would be able to lift their ground game.

Both Williams and Sanders combined for 718 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns in 2024, whereas Robinson alone had 797 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. Again, the trade looks extremely difficult to pull off, but if Dallas can come through with the best offer, there may be some hope.
