Columbus Blue Jackets Call Up Denton Mateychuk and Mikael Pyyhtia from Cleveland Monsters

Columbus Blue Jackets call up defenseman Denton Mateychuk and forward Mikael Pyyhtia from AHL Cleveland for added depth.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have brought back defenseman Denton Mateychuk and forward Mikael Pyyhtia from the Cleveland Monsters, their American Hockey League affiliate, club President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced today.

Mateychuk, 20, played his first NHL game in the Blue Jackets’ 5-4 win against Montreal on Monday, clocking 18:36 of ice time. He has tallied nine goals and 16 assists for a total of 25 points, along with 10 penalty minutes, four power-play goals, and 54 shots on goal across 27 games with Cleveland in 2024-25.

He tops AHL defensemen in goals and points and is tied for third in assists and PPG. The 5-11, 185-pound Winnipeg, Manitoba native was chosen by Columbus in the first round, 12th overall, during the 2022 NHL Draft.

Pyyhtia, 23, has achieved a record of 3-1-4 and two penalty minutes in 25 games with Columbus during 2024-25 and has tallied 3-4-7 along with four PIM in 44 career matchups with the team since his NHL debut after the 2022-23 season.

Hailing from Turku, Finland, he has recorded 11-25-36 and eight penalty minutes in 71 career games with the Monsters since the 2022-23 season, which includes 1-4-5 in four games during 2024-25. The 6-foot, 176-pound winger was chosen by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round, 114th overall, during the 2020 NHL Draft. The Blue Jackets are back in action this evening versus the Boston Bruins. The game starts at Nationwide Arena at 7 p.m. ET.
