Chiefs sign Tyquan Thornton for a fresh start with Mahomes.
The New England Patriots decided to part ways with Tyquan Thornton, but the Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off their Super Bowl victory, seem to think he still has untapped potential.
Thornton joined the Chiefs’ practice squad on Monday, November 18, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This move comes just days after the Patriots released him.
For Tyquan Thornton, this is a dramatic shift. He went from being cast off by a struggling team to landing an opportunity to work with Patrick Mahomes and the reigning champions of the NFL.
If the Chiefs manage to bring out Thornton’s raw abilities, it will undoubtedly leave the Patriots regretting their decision. Stranger things have happened in the league.
Patriots fans may laugh at the idea of the Chiefs relying on Thornton in any significant way. After all, they witnessed his struggles—dropped passes, lack of physical growth, and frequent stints on injured reserve.
Yet, here’s the hard truth: if any team can maximize Thornton’s talents, it’s Kansas City.
Thornton’s upside lies in his ability to stretch the field both horizontally and vertically. His speed aligns perfectly with Mahomes’ cannon of an arm, fitting seamlessly into a Chiefs offense designed around explosive plays and quick strikes.
The Chiefs, often referred to as the creators of the ‘Legion of Zoom,’ appear to be the right environment for Thornton. Meanwhile, the Patriots face uncertainty about their plans for replacing a player who failed to deliver.
So, who exactly are the Patriots banking on to fill the void as a field-stretching option for rookie quarterback Drake Maye? The team selected Ja’Lynn Polk in the second round this year, hoping he would quickly evolve into a key target.
However, things haven’t gone as planned. Head coach Jerod Mayo indicated that veteran Kendrick Bourne will take on a larger role, as reported by Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald:
“Kendrick had a great game, and Polk is developing, and he will be a good player in this league. As the head coach of this football team, we’re trying to win right now, and whoever the hot hand happens to be in that situation will play more.“
During the Patriots’ 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 11, Polk’s struggles were evident, while Bourne saw an uptick in responsibility. Adam Levitan from Establish The Run highlighted the disparity in their target shares, noting Bourne ran 23 routes compared to Polk’s 15.
The increased involvement of Kayshon Boutte and DeMario Douglas suggests the Patriots are still adjusting their receiver hierarchy. However, it’s unlikely a clear No. 1 option will emerge from this unsettled group.
Addressing this weakness should be the top priority for Mayo and general manager Eliot Wolf heading into 2025. Until then, the Patriots will be left reflecting on a string of missed opportunities at this critical position.
Tyquan Thornton joins a list of draft disappointments that includes N’Keal Harry and Aaron Dobson. If the Chiefs manage to turn Thornton into a productive player, it will signal that the Patriots’ issue isn’t identifying talent but rather developing it.
Failing to fix this problem could seriously hinder Maye’s growth and the Patriots’ chances of building a more dynamic offense.
