Chicago Bears’ New Head Coach Ben Johnson Has Overachieved A Feat That The Bears Are Craving For Since 1977

The expectations are coming in hot for the new head coach of the Chicago Bears. He was just hired and the fans and players are already placing all their faith in their supposed saviour. Now the Bears’ fans need to hold their horses because unless the personnel changes happen, the result will be the same.

Johnson had tonnes of success with the Lions because he had an extremely impressive and determined team. He had players such as; Jahmyr Gibbs, Frank Ragnow, Sam LaPorta, Penei Sewell, Aidan Hutchinson, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, to name a few. On the other side, the Bears… Let’s just be diplomatic and say, are not so good as the others. We did see flashes of what rookie QB Caleb Williams can do but there were way too many problems with the franchise.

It always starts with the front office who made a bizarre decision to fire their head coach, mid-way through the season. This certainly generated a lot of inconsistency within the team and it showed. The Bears were dead last in total offense, 31st in passing offense, 26th in rushing offense, and 28th in scoring offense. This will most likely not change unless the Bears made some huge trades in the off-season.

What Has Coach Ben Johnson Achieved That The Bears Desperately Want?

When coach Johnson was with the Detroit Lions, he had the Lions achieve and maintain a top 5 offense in three consecutive years. The Lions were ranked 4th in total offense in 2022, 3rd in total offense in 2023, and 2nd in total offense in 2024. He helped the Lions become an offensive juggernaut by the end of his tenure.

The big question is, what are the Bears expecting with the hiring of coach Johnson? The answer is simple. They want their offensive rankings to be in the top 5 by the end of the 2025 season. The last time, the Chicago Bears were a top 5 offense was back in 1977! The Bears were ranked 3rd in total offense to be precise.

What can Coach Johnson do to improve the Bears’ offense drastically?

While the 2024 season was disastrous, Johnson does have a lot of flexibility going into the 2025-26 season. First off, Caleb Williams will be entering his second year and will have more time to train and get better in the off-season.

Secondly, the Chicago Bears are top 5 in terms of cap space. This is probably the biggest weapon coach Johnson has. We can expect the Bears to make huge off-season changes going into the free agency.

The Bears also have the 10th pick in the draft which could be huge. As per the projections, the Bears will most likely pick Will Campbell who is an offensive tackle for LSU. Campbell has strong footwork and a well-rounded skillset. His has been consistent anchoring the offensive line for LSU. Campbell has over 2554 career snaps, and remained durable throughout. The Bears desperately need a good OT and Will Campbell might just be the pick to go forward with.

Only time will tell what the Bears will do during the off-season.
