Restrictions are lifted for 18 players before the February 6 deadline.

The NBA trade deadline is getting closer, with teams racing to make moves before February 6. While star players like Jimmy Butler and Bradley Beal are at the center of trade rumours, 18 players are now eligible to be traded. This means that 96% of the league is now open to being traded in the window.

What are trade restrictions?

Trade restrictions are rules that prevent players from being traded immediately after signing new contracts, extensions, or receiving certain types of bonuses. The restrictions are usually in place for a specific period (often six months to a year) after the signing. Once that time is up, the player becomes eligible for trade without any limitations.

When are players under trade restrictions?

Trade restrictions are typically triggered for players who sign a veteran extension that locks them into a contract for more than four years. Players who have signed a super-max deal, are also ineligible for trade for one year after signing.

In some cases, like in case of Bradley Beal this season, players have no-trade clauses in their contracts, which prevent them from being traded without their consent.
