Monday Night Football (MNF) in Week 14 got underway from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, as the Los Angeles Chargers hosted the Philadelphia Eagles.

Both teams came into the game with an 8-4 record, but the Chargers were hanging on to the final spot for the playoffs in the AFC, while the Eagles held the number 3 seed in the NFC.

Most of the excitement in this game came from the defensive side of the ball, and we were treated to as many as 8 turnovers, including three on the same play. The low-scoring game ended with the Chargers taking a 22-19 win in overtime.

Error-Filled First Half Spews Up 6 Total Turnovers

The biggest takeaway from the first half of the Chargers vs Eagles game was the defensive effort on display from both teams. Pressuring the quarterback and good coverage from both sides forced multiple mistakes.

Both the Chargers and the Eagles ended the first half with 3 turnovers each, for a total of 6 giveaways. Justin Herbert threw one interception, while the Chargers lost 2 fumbles in the first 2 quarters, whereas Jalen Hurts had 2 picks and a fumble.

Eagles Defense Steps Up

Last week, the Eagles’ defense gave up 281 rushing yards to the Chicago Bears, an uncharacteristic performance from one of the better defensive units in the league. On Monday night, however, the defense stepped up its game to a higher level.

Starting from the defensive line, the Eagles were able to get to Justin Herbert on multiple occasions. The Chargers’ quarterback was under pressure throughout the game, taking a total of 7 sacks. Additionally, that pressure also led to a couple of turnovers, including an interception and a fumble loss.

Coming to the linebackers and the secondary, the second and third lines of defense also played a key part in the game, limiting the Chargers’ run game as well as giving up just one reception over 20 yards.

Saquon Barkley Erupts for 100-plus-Yard Rushing Game

Eagles’ running back Saquon Barkley has been having a quiet season as per his standards. Last season, Barkley particularly lit up the league, finishing with over 2,000 rushing yards, but that has not been the case this year.

Nevertheless, Barkley had one of his best games on the ground against the Chargers, finishing with 20 carries for 122 yards, including a 52-yard run resulting in an Eagles’ touchdown.

Quarterback Struggles for Herbert and Hurts

With both defenses playing their hearts out, quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts struggled to get their respective offenses going. No matter what the stats read for Herbert, his performance was surely impressive after coming off a surgery to his non-throwing hand just a few days earlier.

Eventually, though, if Herbert’s arm and the Eagles’ pass defense did not allow him to let loose, he let his feet do the talking on the field, finishing as the Chargers’ leading rusher with 10 rushes for 66 yards. He finished the game, completing just 12 of 26 passes for 139 passing yards and a touchdown.

As for Jalen Hurts, it was a horrible night altogether. He finished the game with a career-high 5 turnovers, which included one fumble and four interceptions, including the final one in overtime, which handed the Chargers the win. Hurts’ final stat line read 21 completions from 40 attempts, for 240 yards, no touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.

Chargers vs Eagles Monday Night Football Game Stats

In a game dominated mostly by the defense, the Chargers gave up 7 sacks and turned the ball over 3 times, while the Eagles had 5 turnovers themselves. Los Angeles made 5 field goals in as many attempts, whereas Philadelphia made 4 of its 5 attempts.

The Chargers had 16 first downs and converted 7 of 19 third downs. On the other hand, the Eagles had 19 first downs, but could convert only 4 of 13 third-down attempts. Neither team went for a fourth down throughout the game.

The Monday Night Football win by the Chargers moves them up to 9-4 on the season, and more importantly, keeps them close to the Broncos in the AFC West with the playoffs just a month away. Los Angeles will take on Kansas City next week in an AFC West showdown.

The Eagles fall to 8-5, but remain in control of the NFC East. Next up for Philadelphia is yet another game against an AFC West opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, in Week 15.
