First career meeting between the two players.
No. 8 seed Casper Ruud begins his North American hard court swing against Roman Safiullin of Russia in the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto. The two-time Roland Garros runner-up skipped the grass court season due to injury, after which he travelled to Gstaad for an ATP-250. Meanwhile, Safiullin is playing his first match since losing his Wimbledon opener. Follow The Playoffs News and BetMGM for all the predictions and betting odds in the tennis world.
Having transformed into a French Open veteran over the years, Casper Ruud was defeated in Round-2 by Borges this year. The Norwegian won the Madrid Masters in May, beating the likes of Fritz, Medvedev and Draper en route to lifting the trophy. Apart from this, the former World No. 2 also reached the summit clash in Dallas. Currently on a 26-9 run in 2025, Ruud will be hoping for a strong set of matches ahead of the US Open – where he was the finalist in 2022.

Yet to reach a tour-level quarterfinal this year, Roman Safiullin has seen his ranking drop to No. 82 in the world. Last year, the 27-year-old entered the Top-40 for the first time – he made the Wimbledon QFs in 2023 and Round-3 at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Safiullin reached the pre-quarterfinal in Mallorca last month, followed by a tough five set loss vs Darderi at Wimbledon. With wins over the likes of Alcaraz, Zverev and Tsitsipas in the past, there is no doubt that Safiullin can pose a threat to Ruud on Tuesday.

The conditions in Toronto are expected to be warm and dry. As a result, the ball will travel faster and higher – making it difficult for both players to adapt to the playing conditions. With a high possibility of having to adopt a deep baseline position, Ruud can control the rallies and dictate play from the back of the court. However, a lot will depend on his adaptability to surfaces – Safiullin has phenomenal down the line groundstrokes to upset his rhythm.
Prediction: Casper Ruud in three sets.
