Carolina Sends Young Defenseman Scott Morrow to Chicago Wolves for Development

The Carolina Hurricanes have made a few roster tweaks with the regular season now wrapped up, officially sending rookie defenseman Scott Morrow back to their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. It’s a bit of a surprise move, considering Morrow had stuck around past the usual end-of-season recalls and even featured regularly in the lineup during the final stretch.

The 22-year-old defenseman had been with the Hurricanes since the trade deadline and managed to make a solid impression. In 14 games, Morrow collected six points (one goal, five assists), all coming at even strength. He brought offensive upside and mobility to the blue line, something Carolina fans were getting used to seeing. But as the team gears up for the playoffs, the Hurricanes have chosen to roll with more experienced depth options, opting to keep Riley Stillman as their extra defenseman alongside promising prospect Alexander Nikishin, who’s expected to make his NHL debut this postseason.

Rather than have Morrow sit in the press box, the team is sending him back to the AHL where he can log important playoff minutes. He’s been a standout for the Wolves this year, leading all defensemen on the team in scoring with 39 points in 51 games—a performance that even earned him an AHL All-Star nod. It’s a good opportunity for the young blueliner to continue building confidence and stay sharp ahead of what could be a big push for an NHL roster spot next season.

Along with Morrow, the Hurricanes also reassigned forwards Skyler Brind’Amour and Bradly Nadeau, as well as defenseman Domenick Fensore. All three were recalled for the final few games of the season, primarily to give some of the regulars a breather.

It was a memorable stint for Brind’Amour in particular. The 25-year-old son of head coach Rod Brind’Amour netted his first NHL goal in the team’s final game of the season, a special moment for the family and fans alike. Nadeau, Carolina’s top pick from the 2023 draft, also made the most of his brief taste of NHL action, recording his first assist. Fensore didn’t hit the scoresheet this time around, but the experience adds to his development as he continues to push for a bigger role in the future.

For now, these young players’ focus shifts to Chicago’s playoff run in the AHL, while the Hurricanes, bolstered by veterans and high hopes, turn their attention to the NHL postseason.
