Alcaraz is looking for third Barcelona title in four years.
A friendship and rivalry that originated in their teenage years will be renewed on Sunday, when Carlos Alcaraz challenges Holger Rune in the 2025 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell final. The two players come into this match with convincing semifinal victories. In front of a sold out Pista Rafa Nadal, only one prodigious talent can take the coveted trophy back home!
With World No. 1 Jannik Sinner out of action, Carlos Alcaraz has delivered a statement of intent. Winning the title in Monte Carlo and reaching the final in Barcelona without dropping a set, Carlitos is now on a 9-match winning streak. He has won 14 consecutive matches at the Catalonian capital, and possesses a 6-2 record in ATP-500 finals. The World No. 2 defeated the likes of Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fils to get to the title clash.
The 2025 season has been a mixed bag for Holger Rune. Touted by many as the next big thing alongside Sinner and Alcaraz, the 21-year-old Danish starlet has struggled with consistency. The Barcelona Open will be Rune’s second final of the year – he lost the Indian Wells final to Draper. The two-time Roland Garros quarterfinalist has won 75% service games on this surface thus far. Some of his major victories this week have been against Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov.
Carlos Alcaraz leads the head to head against Holger Rune by 2-1. Sunday’s final will be the first time they face each other in a summit clash.

The tennis journeys of Alcaraz and Rune have been aligned since 2017, when they paired up for a doubles event in France. They formed a great friendship since the juniors circuit, and turned pro just two years apart. Regardless, Alcaraz admitted that “there are no friends” when they battle it out for the Barcelona crown. Here’s a full breakdown of their rivalry on the ATP Tour:
| Event | Round | Winner | Score |
| 2023 Wimbledon | Quarterfinal | Carlos Alcaraz | 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 |
| 2022 Paris Masters | Quarterfinal | Holger Rune | 6-3 6-6 RET. |
| 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals | Round Robin | Carlos Alcaraz | 4-3(6) 4-2 4-0 |
| Carlos Alcaraz | Category | Holger Rune |
| 4 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 18 | ATP Singles Titles | 4 |
| 0 | ATP Doubles Titles | 0 |
| 6 | Masters-1000 Titles | 1 |
| 6 | ATP-500 Titles | 0 |
| Silver (Paris 2024) | Olympics Best Performance | – |
| No. 2 | Current World Ranking | No. 13 |
Holger Rune’s semifinal tactic of using a straight drop shot to the forehand of Khachanov will prove worthless against Alcaraz. The Dane could find it hard to keep up with the pace and power of the Spaniard, and the home fans will do him no favours. While he can make inroads on the Alcaraz serve, it will take a monumental effort from Rune to hold fort on his own serve and capture the championship.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz Win: 2/9
Holger Rune Win: 10/3
