Sunday’s game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans was one that had drama both on the field and on the sidelines. Multiple mistakes from the Cardinals led to them blowing a huge fourth-quarter lead to end up losing 22-21 to the Titans, in a game they had no business losing.

The mistakes from Arizona ended up being costly, and a livid Jonathan Gannon was involved in a sideline altercation with his running back Emari Demercado. Videos showed Gannon losing his temper and slapping Demercado hard on the chest, for which he has apologized to the team and Demercado as well.

During a media session, Gannon expressed how he was in the wrong for his behavior and took responsibility for the same.

“I woke up this morning and didn’t feel great about it, honestly,” said Gannon. “So in a team meeting, I addressed it. I apologized to Emari, I apologized to the team. And I just told them I kinda let the moment of what happened get the better of me there.”

What Was the Incident That Brought Out the Reaction?

Leading the Titans 21-6 with just under 13 minutes left in the game, the Cardinals ran a run play on 3rd and one from their 29-yard line. Quarterback Kyler Murray handed the ball off to Demercado, who found a hole through the middle of the field and took it all the way to the house.

But what should have been a 72-yard rushing touchdown for Demarcado ended up being a touchback after he let go of the ball just before crossing the end zone. That play would have put the Cardinals up 27-6 and well on their way to victory, but it changed the entire complexion of the match.

The Titans would go on to score 16 unanswered points as they earned their first win of the season via a miraculous comeback. It was this play that enraged Gannon on the sidelines, and he was later caught on video slapping Demercado and storming off in anger.

Gannon Receives Flak From Analysts

Discussing the incident that took place and Gannon’s talk with the media, ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ show analysts Jeff Saturday and Domonique Foxworth criticized the coach’s behavior.

As former players of the game, both alluded to the fact that while some actions, such as verbal altercations, arguments, and usage of improper language, are fine, nobody is allowed to be physical with another player or staff member.

Moreover, they also spoke at length on how the coach should have tried to lift the spirits of his player and encouraged him to step up his game rather than lose his cool. While the anger and frustration over such a key moment in the game are understandable, putting hands on another individual is a strict no.

Cardinals Fine Jonathan Gannon for His Behavior

In light of the incident that took place, NFL insider Adam Schefter has stated, as per sources, that the Cardinals have fined Gannon $100,000 for his sideline altercation in Sunday’s game.

After starting the season with 2 wins on the trot, the Cardinals have lost their next three games and are now bottom of the NFC West with a 2-3 record. It will not be an easy climb to the top in a division that also consists of strong teams like the 49ers, Rams, and Seahawks.
