A first meeting on grass between Norrie and Bautista Agut
First-round action at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships kicks off today in an action-packed day with several stars taking the court. A tricky opening round clash for both players features the Brit Cameron Norrie up against Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
The match is expected to be an exciting encounter as two veterans of the game clash at the greatest tennis tournament in the world. The winner of this match will advance to the second round to play either Elmer Moller or the number 12 seed, Frances Tiafoe.
Cameron Norrie is entering his 8th appearance at Wimbledon, and he will be backed by local support in today’s match against Bautista Agut. Norrie comes into the tournament with an 11-7 career record at SW19, with his best result being the 2022 semifinals.
However, leading up to the tournament, Norrie hasn’t had a good run on grass so far. The Brit’s transition from clay to grass hasn’t been smooth as he crashed out in his first match at the HSBC Championships against Jakub Menšík, and then made another opening-round exit at the Eastbourne Open against Billy Harris.
Bautista Agut has fared better on grass, having already participated in three events leading up to Wimbledon. Although he lost in the opening match at the Libema Open to Hubert Hurkacz, he made it to the final at the HSBC Championships, only to lose to the number one seed Carlos Alcaraz. He followed that up with a quarterfinal appearance at the Mallorca Championships.

Looking at the stats on grass for both players, Bautista Agut displays his superiority over Norrie. The Spaniard is 55-26 in his career on grass, including one title, and has a 5-3 record this season as well. He has been serving decently with 28 aces against 5 double faults, and has won 88% of his service games, while saving 62% of the break points.
Norrie, meanwhile, has just 4 aces and 5 double faults. He has managed to save only 38% of the break points and has won only 13% of his return games.
Norrie and Bautista Agut have met three times on tour previously, and at present, it is the Brit who holds a commanding 3-0 lead in their head-to-head. Their first meeting was a Davis Cup encounter in 2018, while their latest meeting came in 2024 at Barcelona. However, today’s match marks the duo’s first match on grass.

Norrie holds a 3-0 lead in the head-to-head battle between the two players. Having met again in 2024 and won in Barcelona, the Brit has maintained his advantage over his opponent. Having said that, Norrie has generally fared better on clay, which is where he earned two of his three wins.
Currently, it is the Spaniard who is playing better tennis, especially on this surface. The momentum will be with him, and although the match is expected to be yet another tough encounter, Bautista Agut’s forehand could be the key in this match.
