An NFC South showdown between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons got Week 15 underway on Thursday Night Football (TNF). This game was an important game for the Buccaneers, who are currently in a battle with the Carolina Panthers for the top spot in the division.

Trailing by 14 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Falcons showed immense fighting spirit. Not only did the defense step up, holding the Buccaneers on key plays, but Kirk Cousins also led the offense to 17 fourth-quarter points as the Falcons left Tampa Bay with a 29-28 win on a walk-off field goal.

Mike Evans Didn’t Miss a Beat upon Return

Buccaneers’ top receiver Mike Evans had an excellent first game back upon return from injury. Evans hauled in 6 catches for 132 yards, even though he was targeted 12 times. Nevertheless, his contribution was a major factor in Tampa Bay’s improved offensive showing. The veteran receiver had missed 6 games this season on account of a fractured collarbone.

Buccaneers’ Receiver Trio Makes Impact in First Game Together

Thursday’s game was incidentally also the first time the Buccaneers had all three of their top wide receivers playing at the same time. Evans and teammate Chris Godwin Jr. have been a complementary duo for the past few years, but with the emergence of rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka, Tampa Bay has a dangerous wide receiving core.

Falcons Flagged for 19 Penalties

Despite coming out on top at the end of the game, the Falcons made life difficult for themselves on the field. Atlanta was flagged for 19 penalties, leading to 125 penalty yards.

Offensive tackle Jake Matthews on the offensive side was called for multiple penalties, while experienced cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr. was the main culprit on the defensive side of the ball.

Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson Step Up with Drake London Out for the Game

With the Falcons’ number one wide receiver, Drake London, out for the game due to a knee injury, tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Bijan Robinson led the offense in a big way. Pitts made some crucial plays and was targeted 12 times in the game. He came down with 11 receptions for 166 yards and hauled in 3 of the Falcons’ 4 touchdowns.

On the ground, Bijan Robinson had 19 touches for 93 yards and a touchdown. But that was not all, the talented running back was also a major part of the pass game, being targeted 11 times, in which he caught 8 balls for 82 yards. In all, Robinson had 175 yards from scrimmage.

Kirk Cousins Outplays Baker Mayfield

Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins may be the backup this season, but he had one of the better games of his long career. Leading the Falcons without Drake London, Cousins was able to come through with a clean game, finishing with 373 passing yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.

On the other side, Baker Mayfield also had a decent game, but he was unable to deliver even though the Buccaneers held a 14-point lead in the final quarter. Mayfield finished with 277 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a costly pick late in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons were mathematically eliminated from the postseason after their loss last week, so even though tonight’s result had no impact on their chances of making it to the playoffs, it was a great win for the struggling franchise.

As for the Bucs, the Thursday Night Football loss was a massive one with the NFC South on the line, along with a direct berth to the playoffs. They now hand the advantage to the Panthers, who have now taken over the top spot within the division.
