Brock Purdy Still Has His Doubters Based on This Survey of NFL Sources

Devavrat Kulkarni

Brock Purdy's future remains unclear amidst pending extension

In a league that is increasingly giving more importance to the passing game, a team’s quarterback is the most essential part of their offensive capabilities. Once players step onto the field, the quarterback is essentially the one in command, he is the one to make the most decisions, and he is the leader of the team as they try and make their way toward the opposing end zone.

More often than not, teams with great signal callers can make up for an underperforming team to a certain extent. But a struggling team with even a good signal caller faces a difficult task in this tough sports league that is the NFL

As far as the current crop of quarterbacks is concerned, the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson have been able to separate themselves from others with their ability to extend plays and get the job done at all costs.

San Francisco 49ers’ QB Brock Purdy is now entering his fourth season in the league and is eligible for an extension. So now the question on everyone’s mind is where does the Iowa State alum fair in comparison to the other quarterbacks in the league and should the 49ers extend him?

All but One NFL Source Against Extending Brock Purdy

Over the past couple of weeks, Sports Illustrated carried out a survey of various NFL sources which also includes an unnamed NFC general manager with regard to their opinions on Purdy’s pending extension. It so happens that the survey revealed only one of those sources is in favor of extending Purdy while all others are still unsold on his true capabilities under center.

Why Extending Purdy Is Still a Matter of Doubt

To break this down, we have to first journey back to Purdy’s first year in the professional league and make our way to the present scenario. The 25-year-old Arizona native began his professional career in 2022 when he was drafted by the 49ers as that year’s Mr. Irrelevant. With not much expectations on his shoulders, Purdy was thrust into the starting role near the end of his rookie season winning all 5 of his regular season starts. He led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game but an injury early on derailed his bid to reach the Super Bowl.

The following season, in 2023, Purdy had another stellar year in the Mike Shanahan-led system He was accurate in distributing the ball, threw for 4,280 yards, with 31 touchdowns, to 11 interceptions, and led the league with a passer rating of 113.0. That year, Purdy helped the 49ers come back from a 24-7 deficit at the half in the NFC Championship game against the Lions and very nearly pulled off a Super Bowl win against the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs.

By the start of the 2024 season, everything was great in Wonderland, but that is when things started to fall apart. The injury bug hit San Fran, with key starters such as running back Christian McCaffrey, wideouts Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Ricky Pearsall, as well as tight end George Kittle and left tackle Trent Williams all missing a number of games. The consequence – Purdy struggled, the 49ers struggled, and the team missed the playoffs finishing the year with a 6-11 record.

As a result of such a swing from the 2023 season to the 2024 season, fans and analysts have mixed opinions on whether Purdy deserves to be paid in a similar range as the other top-earning quarterbacks. Quarterback salaries have skyrocketed in this league with Dak Prescott leading the charge at $60 million per year. Many more are making well above $50 million a year, but the question that needs to be answered is whether or not Purdy has shown that he belongs in that bracket of $50 million or more.

Perhaps the way things stand right now, the 49ers’ best option is to play the waiting game and see what happens in the upcoming season. They also have the option of tagging Purdy before they make any hasty decisions and offer him a huge multi-year contract.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
