Exploring the impact of recent NHL injuries on teams and players, with key updates and insights on who’s out of action.
The NHL has recently faced numerous injuries, resulting in several important players being unavailable, affecting their teams’ performance and hopes for the playoffs. From leading scorers to key defenders, the list of injuries keeps expanding, prompting fans and analysts to wonder about alterations in the lineup and timelines for recovery.
These challenges not only disrupt team dynamics but also create opportunities for emerging talents to rise and take the lead. Let’s delve into the specifics and examine the most recent injury updates throughout the league.
St. Louis Blues standout Radek Faska was unable to play in Thursday’s match against the San Jose Sharks due to a skate nearly severing his groin area during Tuesday’s encounter with the Vancouver Canucks.
Faska sustained the injury while battling for the puck along the boards. The forward knocked Danton Heinen down to the ice, and Heinen’s response—a backward thrust of his left leg—led to his skate slicing into Faska’s groin. The act seemed unintentional, but the injury left the former Dallas Star skating briefly before doubling over in pain.

Faska quickly made his way to the bench and then carefully headed to the locker room. He hasn’t returned to the ice for the Blues since the incident and is expected to miss several upcoming games as he recovers.
While Faska was likely wearing a sports guard for protection, the incident highlights the limited defense a cup can offer against the sharp edge of a skate blade. Thankfully, Faska is expected to make a full recovery, though the idea of stitching to such a sensitive area is enough to make anyone wince.
It’s not uncommon for hockey players to brush off injuries like these as part of the game, but Faska will need sufficient recovery time. While his return for future games is doubtful, fans and teammates alike will be hoping for his speedy return to full health.
Vegas Golden Knights forward Ivan Barbashev (upper body) did not complete Sunday’s game against Minnesota. He was restricted to seven shifts and 5:00 of ice time because of an upper-body injury. Barbashev has played an essential role for the Golden Knights, recording 15 goals and 30 points in 31 games on the top line.

He has been especially impactful in five-on-five situations, ranking fifth in the league with 29 points at even strength. Barbashev needs to heal by Thursday to prevent missing more time. If Barbashev is unavailable for the upcoming match against Vancouver, either Victor Olofsson or Tanner Pearson could step into the top six.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will miss goaltender Anthony Stolarz for several games after the team placed him on injured reserve on Sunday. The team announced the decision before their matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. Stolarz, who sustained a lower-body injury during Thursday’s 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, will be sidelined for a minimum of three games, as required by NHL rules for players on injured reserve.

The Leafs retroactively applied Stolarz’s IR status to Thursday, which means the game against the Red Wings on Saturday counts as part of his three-game absence.
Initially deemed “day-to-day” for the matchup against Detroit, Stolarz’s condition worsened, prompting Toronto to place him on IR and call up Dennis Hildeby from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
The 23-year-old Hildeby is making the most of this opportunity, having already filled in earlier this season under similar circumstances.
Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan announced after Monday’s practice that defenseman Marcus Pettersson will be out week-to-week due to a lower-body injury. Pettersson exited late in the first period of Saturday’s game in Ottawa and did not return after an awkward collision with the boards.
“He’s a tough guy to replace on our group at defense back there. He’s a stabilizing defenseman no matter what pair we put him with, He just has a real conscientious game on both sides of the puck.” : Sullivan said.
The 28-year-old has been a reliable and consistent presence for the Penguins since being acquired from Anaheim in 2018, playing a critical role in the top-four defensive pairings. Initially, Sidney Crosby expressed hope for a positive outcome, particularly given Pettersson’s impressive ironman streak—he last missed a game due to injury on April 11, 2023, against Chicago.

This season, Pettersson ranks third on the team in average ice time at 21:47 per game and leads all players in shorthanded ice time with 2:49 per game, a key contributor to the NHL’s ninth-best penalty kill.
Sullivan noted earlier this season that Pettersson “is still enhancing his offensive skills,” a sentiment reinforced by his impressive goal against the Florida Panthers on December 3. Beyond his on-ice contributions, Pettersson is a valued teammate and competitor, well-liked in the locker room, making his absence a significant setback for the team.
At Monday’s practice, Matt Grzelcyk was paired with Erik Karlsson, while Ryan Shea skated alongside Ryan Graves on the third defensive pair.
