Boston Celtics Trade Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta Hawks in Three-Team Trade

Following the trade of Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Boston Celtics traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Hawks, Celtics and Nets finalized a three-team trade. According to the deal, the Celtics traded Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, Terance Mann and Atlanta’s No. 22 pick to the Nets, and Georges Niang and a second-rounder to the 2024 champions.

Following the deal, the Nets now have five first-round picks this year, including No. 8, 19, 22, 26, and 27. In addition, after Holiday and Porzingis’ trade, the Celtics have now saved $180 million in luxury taxes, which was originally projected to be a combined payroll and tax bill of over $500 million in the next season.

Boston Celtics Under Second Luxury Tax Apron After Back-to-Back Trades

After sending two of their players in back-to-back trade deals, the 18-time champions are now below the second luxury tax apron. They now could have a path of getting out of the luxury tax completely out of this season. It is to be noted that the Celtics received a major blow when Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles tear in the second round of the playoffs against the New York Knicks.

In the wake of the new season and Tatum expected to be out of action for most of the time in 2025-26, the Celtics were expected to make a few cost-cutting changes. They have multiple veteran players on the team who could have proven to be a massive burden on the team financially as well as in terms of getting the trades done.

Talking about Porzingis, the 29-year-old, who played a key role in helping the Celtics win the 2024 NBA title, would make $30.7 million next season on an expiring contract. While he was in and out of the team in the second half of the past season, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft is expected to gel easily in the Hawks’ frontcourt. He finished the recent past season with an average of 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
