Benfica vs. Sporting Lisbon Liga Portugal – Injury News, Match Preview and Predicted Line-Ups

The Derby de Lisboa promises more than just pride this weekend as Benfica and Sporting CP collide in a potentially title-deciding clash at the Estadio da Luz. With both sides locked on 78 points and just two games left in the Primeira Liga season, the pressure could not be higher. Sporting currently sit top due to a superior head-to-head record, but that could all change in 90 minutes.

Benfica, who boast a better goal difference and 25 wins from 32 matches, must win by more than one goal on Saturday to leapfrog their city rivals and place themselves in pole position for the title. Roger Schmidt’s men have shown up when it matters most this season, including emphatic wins over Porto and strong performances in Europe. Despite a nervy 3-1 win over Estoril last weekend, they remain a formidable force at home.

Sporting, meanwhile, are seeking their first league title since 2021 and rode their luck in a dramatic comeback win over Gil Vicente last time out. Sporting will remain favourites for the title if they avoid defeat on Saturday. A draw or a win for Sporting will all but secure the crown due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Benfica Injury News

Benfica have received a major boost ahead with Angel Di Maria declared fully fit. The Argentine veteran is renowned for delivering in high-pressure fixtures and could be deployed from the outset here. Should Di Maria return to the XI, Zeki Amdouni is likely to drop to the bench.

Left-back Alvaro Carreras is also back in the mix after serving a one-match suspension during the win over Estoril. The Spaniard expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup. Manager Bruno Lage may consider reverting to a three-man backline to cope with the threat posed by Sporting’s leading scorer Viktor Gyokeres. However, Benfica remain without Alexander Bah, Manu Silva, and Renato Sanches, all of whom continue their recovery from injury.

Sporting Injury News

Sporting will be without the services of Nuno Santos, Joao Simoes, and Daniel Bragança, all of whom are sidelined through injury. Geny Catamo, who has scored in each of his last two appearances against Benfica, may be replaced at right-wing-back by Geovany Quenda, who impressed off the bench in the previous match and could be rewarded with a start. In midfield, captain Morten Hjulmand is expected to return to the lineup after being rested against Gil Vicente. He will likely partner Hidemasa Morita in the centre.
