Barcelona Youngster Brushes Off Pressure and Praises Teammates in Pre-Match Press Conference.

Lamine Yamal fronted the media on Tuesday ahead of Barcelona’s crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Inter Milan. The match which Yamal and Co. are set to play at home on Wednesday, will be one of their toughest this campaign. Especially considering how tough an opponent Inter Milan are and their current exceptional form.

Ahead of the match, in the press conference alongside coach Hansi Flick, Yamal offered insight into his mindset, praised his teammates, and spoke about the magnitude of the moment. The 17-year-old youngster, who will make his 100th appearance for Barca on Wednesday, demonstrated remarkable maturity as he fielded questions with calm confidence.

No Fear, No Pressure

Yamal dismissed any nerves before one of the biggest games of his career. He said that any fear “was left behind in Mataró a long time ago.” He emphasised on staying motivated and his fearless nature also came through when he took a dig on the people that have called him arrogant. Yamal said:

“I don’t have any fear, but I do feel that motivation and get those butterflies in my stomach before a game. I wouldn’t say I feel any pressure. The atmosphere at the Copa del Rey final, for example, is something to go out and enjoy.”

“While I’m winning, they can’t say anything. When they beat me, they can.”

Focused on the Team, Not Comparisons

While many continue to draw comparisons between Yamal and Lionel Messi, the young winger isn’t entertaining them. He reiterated that he’s focusing on improving and contributing to the team, saying: “I don’t compare myself to anyone, much less Messi. I admire him; he’s the best in history.”

The youngster acknowledged that him along with other key players, like Pedri and Raphinha get the recognition. However, others deserve the same and he was quick to shine a light on his teammates who often go unnoticed, saying “Inigo and Frenkie are incredible. Maybe they don’t get as much attention as others, but they’re very important.”

Respect for Inter, Optimism for Barca

Looking ahead to the clash with Inter, Yamal acknowledged the Italian side’s strengths, saying “They’re very strong defensively and quick on the counterattack. We have to play like we always do to advance.”

He has already helped Barcelona defeat Real Madrid in three straight meetings this season. Yamal believes the team has rediscovered its identity, saying “We’ve lacked heart in recent seasons, and now we have it.”

Yamal and Co. will now face Inter Milan at home in the first leg determined to get another big lead like they did in the quarter-finals. However, considering how good this Inter Milan side has been, it will not come easy. Hence, moments of excellence from key players like Yamal will be needed.
