Barcelona Strip Ter Stegen of Captaincy Duties Amid Injury Dispute

Barcelona have removed goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen from the club captaincy. The development comes after tensions between the German and the club escalated over his injury status and La Liga registration rules. The 33-year-old goalkeeper last played in June for Germany.

The veteran shot-stopper underwent back surgery at the end of July. The dispute reportedly began when Ter Stegen refused to let Barcelona share his medical data with La Liga. This information would have determined whether he qualifies as a long-term absentee, which could have then allowed Barcelona to free up salary space for player registrations.

However, Ter Stegen recently announced on social media that he would be sidelined for three months. La Liga rules require a player to be out for a minimum of four months to be considered a long-term injury. As a result, this discrepancy frustrated Barcelona’s management.

The Catalan giants signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol last month and also secured Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford on loan. The expectation was that Ter Stegen might be sold to create room in the wage budget. However, the German interational required further surgery to repair multiple knee ligament tear sustained last season, which ruined Barca’s plans to sell him.

In a statement, Barcelona said:

“Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the sporting direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain.”

Since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, Ter Stegen has made more than 400 appearances for Barcelona. He has won six La Liga titles and one Champions League trophy with the Spanish giants. His future at the club now looks increasingly uncertain as the standoff continues.

Araujo To Succeed Ter Stegen

Ronald Araujo has been named Barcelona’s first captain after Marc-Andre ter Stegen was stripped of the role. The Uruguayan defender, who was previously second captain, will lead the team for now. The decision was made jointly by the club’s sporting management and coach Hansi Flick.

Araujo has worn the armband several times in the past and will now take on the responsibility of guiding the squad both on and off the pitch. With Ter Stegen out of the captaincy for the moment, Barcelona’s leadership group now includes Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha and Pedri. The club has postponed the formal vote for captains until the situation with Ter Stegen is resolved.
