Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Head to Head: Who Holds the Edge in Overall Record Ahead of La Liga Madrid Derby?

Moumita Dutta

The Madrid derby is set to return this weekend as Atletico Madrid host Real Madrid in La Liga’s standout clash. Los Blancos are arriving at the Metropolitano in perfect form. They’ve won all six of their league games and are currently sitting at top of La Liga table with 18 points.

That is, two points clear of Barcelona in second place. Xabi Alonso’s side have also made a strong start in Europe. They’ve eased past Marseille in their Champions League opener. Atletico, meanwhile, have been inconsistent. They’ve picked up only nine points from six matches.

They did, however, show resilience in midweek as they overturned a two-goal deficit against Rayo Vallecano. It was all thanks to a Julian Alvarez hat-trick which saw them get away with a win. Simeone’s side have not displayed their usual defensive solidity.

They’ve conceded seven league goals already and three more in Europe against Liverpool. Historically, Real Madrid have dominated this fixture, with 123 wins from 240 meetings. Yet, Atletico are unbeaten in their last five La Liga derbies, and three of the last three league encounters ended in 1-1 draws
