Aryna Sabalenka Marks Her Territory as Miss Consistent With Insane Record Upon Reaching Wimbledon 2025 Quarterfinals

World No. 1 and top seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated former doubles partner Elise Mertens to remain on course for a maiden grass court major at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The Belarusian fended off a battling Mertens to emerge victorious in straight sets (6-4 7-6[4]) and book her spot in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka also attained an impeccable Grand Slam record in the process.

The 27-year-old is a two-time semifinalist at the Championships, and has reiterated her desire to go all the way in London. She faces a German obstacle next – World No. 104 Laura Siegemund, who backed up her upset over Madison Keys with a victory over lucky loser Solana Sierra, stands in her path. However, Sabalenka is undefeated in two encounters vs Siegemund.

Despite beating Mertens on nine consecutive occasions ahead of Sunday’s last eight contest, Sabalenka was pushed to her limits. The No. 24 seed added some drop shots to her arsenal, and made a valiant effort in moving forward when she could. Yet, the three-time major winner proved her clutch nature by breaking late in the opener and overturning the second set tiebreaker.

“I am super happy with the performance,” said Sabalenka after getting over the line. The World No. 1 missed out on competing at the Wimbledon Championships in 2024 due to a shoulder injury. “It was a battle. I was happy to get this win.” She continued, “I know how smart she is and I knew she would fight until the very end. She really challenged me today.”

The victory marks Sabalenka’s 11th straight quarterfinal entry at the Grand Slam level. The last time she lost prior to the final eight stage was way back during the 2022 Roland Garros. Only three women – Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and Gabriela Sabatini – have reached more back-to-back quarterfinals since 1990. If this isn’t a prime example of consistent dominance on the women’s circuit, not much else is.

Aryna Sabalenka has won 23 of the last 25 matches she’s played in Grand Slams.
