Argentina are on the verge of sealing their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and they will aim to do just that when they host rivals Brazil on Tuesday at Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires. Argentina will qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they either draw or win against Brazil. Argentina battled to a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay in their last match courtresy of Thiago Almada’s stunning second-half strike.

Under the guidance of Lionel Scaloni, the reigning world champions have been dominant throughout the qualifying campaign, currently sitting comfortably at the top of the standings with 28 points. On the other hand, Brazil occupy third place in the table, trailing Argentina by seven points. Vinicius Junior was the hero for Brazil in their last match as he netted a thunderous long-range effort in the 99th minute to seal a dramatic victory over Colombia.

Argentina’s talisman Lionel Messi was not included in Argentina’s squad for these qualifiers after medical scans revealed a minor adductor injury. Messi sustained the injury during Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over Atlanta United. Alongside Messi, Lionel Scaloni will also be without several other key players for the clash against Uruguay. Paulo Dybala (Roma), Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis), and Gonzalo Montiel (River Plate) have all been ruled out due to injury concerns. Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has also withdrawn from the squad after suffering a hamstring injury, dealing another blow to Argentina’s attacking options.

Nico Gonzalez is suspended after being shown a straight red card in Argentina’s win against Uruguay.

Brazil will be forced to make several changes to their starting lineup after suffering a double injury blow in their previous match against Colombia. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker (Liverpool) and midfielder Gerson (Flamengo) have both withdrawn from the squad after being forced off during Thursday’s victory. In Alisson’s absence, Bento is expected to step up while Andre is in line to replace Gerson.

Additionally, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bruno Guimaraes will miss the match due to suspension after picking up their second yellow cards of the qualifiers. Leo Ortiz is likely to slot into central defense, while Joelinton could get the nod in midfield.
