Anthony Davis Injury Update: Will the Lakers’ star play against Memphis Grizzlies?

Anthony Davis’ Foot Injury Casts Doubt Over Lakers’ Road Finale Against Grizzlies.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ injury concerns worsened Monday night as Anthony Davis re-aggravated a lingering foot injury in a 115-103 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Despite not being officially ruled out for Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Davis will be considered day-to-day, according to team sources.

The Lakers have labeled his injury a left heel contusion, an issue that has troubled him since the summer, though he remains determined to play through the pain if possible.

The incident occurred during the fourth quarter, when Davis went up to block a shot by rookie Ron Holland II, landing awkwardly on Holland’s foot. He immediately hobbled, taking weight off his left foot and briefly leaning on the basket stanchion for support. On the very next play, Davis drove to the rim, drew a foul, and again landed heavily on his injured foot, clutching it in clear discomfort.

Despite the pain, Davis stayed in the game and finished with an impressive stat line—37 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. However, he admitted afterward that he was not at full strength. Lakers head coach JJ Redick, while impressed by Davis’ resilience, emphasized the need to prioritize his long-term health.

Anthony Davis’ absence could be a big blow for the Lakers

Anthony Davis’ potential absence in Wednesday’s game against Memphis Grizzlies would be a significant blow for the Lakers, especially as they wrap up a challenging five-game road trip.

Currently averaging a league-leading 32.6 points per game, along with 11.6 rebounds, three assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.7 blocks, Davis has been the engine driving the Lakers’ early success. A win in Memphis would not only end the road trip on a positive note but would also help stabilize the Lakers’ season after a recent skid.

Losing Anthony Davis for any period would be a serious setback for the Los Angeles Lakers, whose roster is heavily reliant on its stars. The team’s bench production, currently at 18.9 points per game, ranks last in the NBA and is on pace to be historically low.

By comparison, last season’s least productive bench—the Phoenix Suns’—still managed 26.6 points per game, and one would have to look back to the 2017 Minnesota Timberwolves (22.8) to find a reserve unit averaging under 25 points. The last team to fall below the 20-point threshold was the 2013 Portland Trail Blazers, with 18.5.

In short, Davis’ presence is essential if the Lakers hope to compete in the packed Western Conference.
