Shams Charania Shares Concerning Health Update on Gregg Popovich.
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich missed Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers due to an undisclosed health issue. The news prompted concern, with ESPN’s Shams Charania providing an update that emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
“I’m told that it was a health issue, and it was a serious health issue that the Spurs dealt with and Gregg Popovich dealt with over the weekend,” Charania said.
“It was a situation on Saturday night pregame that Gregg Popovich needed medical attention in San Antonio. It is still uncertain when he’s going to make it back on the floor, on the sidelines for this team. There is a great level of concern around the situation for the Spurs, for Gregg Popovich,” he added.

Popovich, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with 1,390 regular season victories and 170 postseason wins, has led the Spurs to five NBA championships and three Coach of the Year awards. At 75 years old, he is in his 29th season with San Antonio, making him the longest-tenured head coach in American professional sports.
In Popovich’s absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson is serving as interim head coach. Johnson provided an update after Saturday’s game, noting, “He’s not feeling well. This has happened before. I think everybody’s just always got to be ready for the next man up. We’ve had it with injuries, and sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well or things come up in life. He’s just not feeling well.”

On Monday, Johnson shared that Popovich had told him on Sunday that he was “in good spirits.” Johnson added, “Obviously, the circumstances are unique. But as much continuity and familiarity we can have, I think is what we’re looking for. That’s what we know Pop would want. He said he wants us to do it. We have talked and nothing changes.”
The Spurs are off to a 3-4 start, with Johnson stepping into the interim role, carrying on Popovich’s legacy while he focuses on recovery.
