Angel Di Maria in Tears as He Completes Emotional Return to Rosario Central

Eighteen Years After Leaving, the Argentine Star Fulfills His Dream of Returning to His Boyhood Club.

Angel Di Maria has returned to his boyhood club Rosario Central after 18 years. Expectedly, it has proved to be an emotional homecoming for the veteran winger. The 37-year-old broke down in tears as he was unveiled in front of fans and the press during his official presentation at the Hall Centenario on Monday.

Di Maria began his career in football at Rosario Central in 1992 as a youth player. He eventually made his senior debut in 2005 only at 17 years of age. After two seasons with the first team, he embarked on an 18-year journey across Europe.

He featured for Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and most recently, for his second stint at Benfica. He has registered over 700 club appearances and countless trophies. This includes the prestigious UEFA Champions League and World Cup.

Di María’s career has been illustrious, to say the least. Yet, the winger admits returning home surpasses all his previous achievements. After rejoining the club, Di Maria said in his first press conference, “This moment surpasses everything I’ve done. Coming back home, living in Rosario, and wearing the Central shirt is truly special.”

His return had been delayed last year after threats were made against his family. He previously told the local media, “Those months were horrible. We could only sit there and cry each night over not being able to carry out that dream return.”

A Dream Fulfilled for Angel Di Maria

Di Maria’s second stint at Rosario Central had been in the works since May. However, threats and contractual obligations with Benfica kept him in Europe until the Club World Cup. The Portuguese side was eliminated from the last 16 in the tournament.

Now, with his family by his side and the fans’ adoration welcoming him back, he is ready for the next chapter. The Argentine also shared details about Lionel Messi’s support throughout his decision-making process. Di María revealed:

“Leo wrote to me recently. He waited a bit because my phone was blowing up, but he congratulated me, wished me luck, and told me he was happy that I could make my dream come true.”

Rosario Central’s head coach Gonzalo Garcia praised the veteran, saying, “He’s one of the reasons I’m at the club today.” Di Maria could feature for the Rosario Central soon, with their Copa Santa Fe fixture against 9 de Julio on the horizon.
