Rublev Looks to Halt Tien’s Rise in DC Second-Round Clash.
Fifth seed Andrey Rublev takes on American youngster Learner Tien in the second round of the Citi DC Open 2025. As one of the top seeds, Rublev received a first-round bye, while Tien advanced comfortably past wildcard Emilio Nava. The winner of this clash will go on to face either 12th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Jaume Munar in the next round. Rublev’s season has been anything but stable. The Russian found some rhythm with a semifinal run at Open Occitanie and quarterfinals in Rotterdam.

His biggest moment came in Doha, where he lifted his 17th career singles title by edging out Jack Draper in a three-set final. However, a slump followed, with no wins past the second round, with the exception of Hamburg (finals) and the Mifel Tennis Open (semifinals). Statistically, he’s produced 301 aces, winning 76% of his first-serve points, 29% on first-serve returns, and converting 36% of 293 break-point chances.

Andrey wins his 2nd Doha title.
But the biggest win of all this week was his composure.
A calmer Andrey, but just as passionate.
If he can keep this up, there’s truly nothing to hold him back.

Tien, still early in his professional journey after turning pro in 2023, is gradually building experience on the main tour. While he’s yet to establish consistency, he’s had some standout moments, including quarterfinal runs in Acapulco and Mallorca. The 19-year-old has fired 112 aces this season, winning 68% of first-serve points, 26% on first-serve returns, and converting 39% of 176 break-point opportunities.

Andrey Rublev and Learner Tien do not have a head-to-head yet.
| Andrey Rublev | Category | Learner Tien |
| 10 | Current Ranking | 67 |
| 358-200 | Career W-L | 16-21 |
| 23-16 | YTD W-L | 11-15 |
| 17 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Experience favors Rublev, who’s rediscovered his form just in time to challenge the promising but still-developing Learner Tien. Given Rublev’s sharper baseline game and mental edge, the Russian holds the edge.
