Draw Analysis – Manageable Early, Tough Later

Zverev lands in the bottom half alongside Carlos Alcaraz, making for a high-stakes semifinal collision course. But before he can entertain revenge for last year’s heartbreaking third-set tiebreak loss to Jannik Sinner, the German has business to handle early.

After a first-round bye, Zverev opens against either veteran Gael Monfils or wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy, both of whom present wildly different challenges. Assuming he advances, Zverev is projected to face 27th seed Brandon Nakashima in the third round. Nakashima stunned Fritz here last year and will be eager to repeat that upset energy.

Zverev’s real test begins in the quarterfinals, where he could run into 8th seed Ben Shelton. The explosive lefty has a penchant for delivering thunderous performances on home soil and reached the US Open semis last year. Other dark horses lurking in this section include Sebastian Korda and Tomas Machac, both capable of catching fire.

Possible Opponents

Should Zverev push through to the semifinals, a rematch with Carlos Alcaraz looms large. Zverev defeated the Spaniard at the 2023 ATP Finals, but Alcaraz thrives on outdoor hard courts and would be hungry to even the score. It’s a matchup with Grand Slam-level tension, and whoever holds serve under pressure will likely emerge.

If Zverev survives that, he’ll look to the top half, where Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, Holger Rune, or Frances Tiafoe could await in the final. None are easy outs, but Zverev’s track record in Cincinnati and his recent uptick in form give him a real chance.
