Alexander Zverev Crashes Out to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Stunning 2025 US Open Upset

Alexander Zverev is out of the 2025 US Open after a third round defeat.

Alexander Zverev will have to wait a little longer for that elusive Grand Slam. The World No. 3 has just become the latest and perhaps the biggest addition to the 2025 US Open upset list. In an electric 4 set match, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime has emerged victorious with a 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. That’s a monumental win for Aliassime, especially because of their history against each other. As for Zverev, this is another Wimbledon-level debacle for him.

Alexander Zverev Left Frustrated By Felix Auger-Aliassime’s Forehands

The German had a lot to prove heading into the US Open. Despite his experience, he wasn’t able to crack the Alcaraz-Sinner duo. More importantly, Zverev was coming off a disastrous Wimbledon that forced him to spend a few days in Mallorca with the Nadal family. In his words, Zverev wanted to spoil the party of Alcaraz and Sinner. This match could’ve been simple; he did have a winning record against Aliassime. But it was not to be.

The first set started well for Alexander Zverev; the German was in control and playing well. In fact, the second set too was largely even, but it was the tiebreakers that turned the tide. Felix Auger-Aliassime, who till then was searching for his rhythm, suddenly found it. His big forehands began dominating Zverev, who, too, began making mistakes he doesn’t normally make. Such was Zverev’s frustration that at one point in the match, he threw his racket to the ground. This was a monumental upset, not just because of the rank gap but also because of their records.

Aliassime Aims for His Deepest Run as Zverev Starts Tackling Tough Questions

Before this match, the Canadian hadn’t beaten any top-5-ranked players in the Grand Slams. On top of that, Alexander Zverev had a 6-2 record against Aliassime. Perhaps that’s why the 25th-seeded Aliassime couldn’t hide his happiness after the match. “This feels good. I’ve been coming here since 2018. I’m still young, it’s been a few years, but I’m working my way,” Aliassime said after the match.

Though the 25-year-old admitted that there’s still a lot of the tournament to play, this win means a lot to him. Aliassime will be facing Andrey Rublev in the next round. The Canadian will be hoping to win that match and reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinals since the Australian Open in 2022. As for Zverev, things are beginning to look rather dreary for the German.

Wimbledon was supposed to be a flash in the pan moment, not the beginning of a trend. After an early exit there, Zverev has failed to reach the second week in Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2018. Tough questions need to be asked about his preparations before the Grand Slams. But until then, Zverev’s wait for that first Grand Slam has stretched a little bit more. Will he win one in 2026? It’s still too early to predict.
