The latest news from Tennessee is the release of wide receiver Treylon Burks, whom they drafted in the 2022 NFL draft. The former first-round draft pick never panned out for the Titans and has missed crucial games over his first three seasons in the league.

Tennessee acquired Burks via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles involving star wide receiver A.J. Brown. Let us explore in detail how the overall trade worked out for both teams and which one came out on top.

How The Eagles Won the Trade Over the Titans

The trade that took place in 2022 between the Eagles and the Titans saw Philadelphia receive wide receiver A.J. Brown in return for a 2022 first-round and a 2022 third-round draft pick.

The Titans used that number 18 overall pick to draft Burks and traded away the third-round pick and a 2022 number 26 overall pick to the New York Jets for cornerback Roger McCreary, offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, and wide receiver Kyle Phillips.

In these past three years, Burks has never played all 17 games in any season. In fact, he has played only 21 games out of a possible 51, and started only 14 of those. Through his three-year career thus far, Burks has a total of 665 receiving yards and 1 touchdown from 49 receptions.

Additionally, none of the other three players from that trade ever panned out for the Titans. McCreary has just 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 15 pass deflections from 43 games. Both Petit-Frere and Phillips have been released by the Titans due to unimpressive performances.

On the other hand, A.J. Brown has gone on to become an integral part of the Eagles’ offense over the past three seasons. As the team’s leading receiver, Brown has notched up 4,031 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns from 47 games.

He has earned three Second-Team All-Pro honors, all with the Eagles, 3 Pro Bowl honors, two of which came in Philadelphia, and was an essential piece of the Eagles’ Super Bowl winning season last year.

Why did Tennessee release Burks?

The lack of production and insufficient performance of Burks was one of the major reasons for his release. However, most of that stemmed from him constantly missing games due to injury troubles throughout his three-year career.

In his rookie season, Burks played in just 11 games, starting only 6 of them, while he missed out on nearly 6 games due to a turf toe injury, which he suffered in Week 4. In the 2023 season, he played only 10 games, starting 8 of them, and missed 7 games.

Last season, Burks, who was the fourth receiver on Tennessee’s depth chart, suffered another knee injury in a Week 7 game against the Bills. Apparently, he tore his ACL and underwent a season-ending surgery.

Although still with the team in 2025, the last straw for Burks came when he suffered a fractured collarbone in training camp on July 26, 2025. With the injuries piling up, the team seems to have lost patience, leading to his release following a disastrous period of three years.
