Joel Embiid’s season went from bad to worse on Monday night when the Sixers’ star was ejected in the second quarter against the San Antonio Spurs.

With just under three minutes left in the half, Embiid argued an offensive foul call after charging into Victor Wembanyama, who was set in the lane.

The 2023 NBA MVP immediately confronted referee Jenna Schroeder, leading to a heated exchange.

The situation escalated quickly as Embiid had to be held by teammate Kyle Lowry, head coach Nick Nurse, and others before being escorted to the locker room.

After the game, the NBA pool report clarified the incident, calling the contact “incidental in nature” and not warranting further punishment.

“After postgame review there is incidental contact with both of them, but it was incidental in nature. There was nothing that warranted any further punishment. It was just incidental in nature”, the NBA pool report stated.

As the referee deemed the contact “incidental in nature”, Embiid is unlikely to face any suspension. However, the 30-year-old could be fined for his outburst.

The season has turned out to be frustrating for Embiid and the Sixers, who completed only their 10th win of the season on Monday. The seven-time All-Star has played in only eight games due to left knee soreness, a sinus fracture, and a previous three-game suspension for an altercation with a reporter.

The 76ers will now travel to Boston to face the defending Champions Celtics on Christmas.
