Day 9 of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on the No.1 Court kicks off today with quarterfinal action as the fifth seed Taylor Fritz takes on the 19th-seeded Karen Khachanov. This will be the third career meeting between the two players in which the Russian holds a 2-0 advantage.

The winner of this match will reach the semifinals for the first time at Wimbledon and will face either Cameron Norrie or Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.

Taylor Fritz Continues Stunning Run on Grass This Year

The 27-year-old American is currently enjoying a golden run on grass courts. Fritz kicked off his grass-court season by winning the Boss Open over Alexander Zverev in the final. While he lost in the first round at Queen’s, he picked up a second grass-court title at the Eastbourne Open just ahead of Wimbledon.

Fritz’s Wimbledon campaign didn’t start off the way he would have hoped. He came from 2-0 down in the first round against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and played in another five-setter against Gabriel Diallo in the second round.

His third-round clash against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina went to four sets after he dropped the third set, but his round of 16 match against Jordan Thompson ended rather quickly after the latter retired mid-match. Fritz’s service has been the strong point of his game so far, with 79 aces in just 4 matches.

Karen Khachanov Battling Through Some Tight Matches

Khachanov entered Wimbledon on the back of a 4-2 record on grass following his third-round exit from Roland Garros. He reached the semifinals of the Halle Open, after which he earned a straight-sets win over Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of Wimbledon.

However, he was taken to the distance in both his round 2 and round 3 matchups against Shintaro Mochizuki and Nuno Borges, respectively. In both matches, he came from behind 1-2.

However, he played a much better game in his round of 16 tie against Kamil Majchrzak, coming out on top in straight sets. Khachanov’s serving has been consistent, but his play while returning has been a strong aspect of his run here.

Taylor Fritz or Karen Khachanov – Who Has an Edge in the Recent Encounters?

Fritz and Khachanov have played against each other only twice prior to their match today. On both occasions, Khachanov has come out on top, but it is important to note that both their previous matches were contested many years ago.

The pair first met at the 2019 Shanghai Masters. At the time, Fritz was still an upcoming player, while Khachanov had been on tour a couple of years earlier. Khachanov won the match in straight sets, but their second encounter just the following year at the ATP Cup was closer as Fritz took the Russian to three sets. Based solely on their recent history, Khachanov has the edge in this match.
