Sinner visibly upset for his friend Dimitrov after his injury
A round of 16 clash at Wimbledon 2025 between the number 1 seed, Jannik Sinner, and the number 19 seed, Grigor Dimitrov, ended in a cruel fashion as the latter had to retire in the third set after leading 2 sets to love.
Diimtrov’s injury occurred in just the fourth game of the third set when he served an ace to hold and even the score at 2-2. Seeing his opponent on the ground, the Italian immediately made his way to the other side of the net, and not only checked with him, but also offered kind words after the match, showing his humility and class as one of the leading tennis players of this generation.
Get well soon, my friend. Wishing you all the best ❤️🩹 @GrigorDimitrov pic.twitter.com/pKvd9hnDOB

Winning a match at the Grand Slam level and progressing to the next round is every tennis player’s dream. Fans and the media remember these players and hold them in high regard based on the success they have had on the court.
But, how these players conduct themselves and their on-court nature when things don’t go their way is also part and parcel of how people will end up remembering these legends. In Monday’s round of 16 match against the Bulgarian, Sinner once again showed why it is not just his mesmerising tennis, but also his humble and genuinely kind nature that has gravitated so many fans toward him.
As soon as Dimitrov went to the floor, the Italian made his way toward his opponent, checked up on him, stayed with him during the entire process when the physios attended to him, and even picked up his racquet and placed it near his bench. But what caught the attention of fans was his warm and encouraging words during the on-court interview when asked about the incident.
“He is an incredible player. I think we all saw this today, and he’s been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player, good friend of mine also, and seeing him in this position it’s honestly you know, if there would be a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve. But now mostly I hope he has a speedy recovery, very unlucky from his side. I don’t take this as a win at all.”

While serving to hold for 2-2 in the third set, Dimitrov clutched his chest area and immediately sat on the ground, all the while holding the right side of his chest. He could be heard shouting “My Pec, my pec” while appearing in quite some discomfort. As per reports, Dimitrov suffered a right pectoral muscle injury.
After receiving some treatment on the chair, Dimitrov left the court to be attended further, but after a brief hiatus, the Bulgarian returned only to shake hands and call it quits. The discomfort was still evident as he could barely shake the umpire’s hand and acknowledge the crowd for their support.

Grigor has had to deal with so much over the last few years
Hard to watch this happen to anyone, especially someone as kind & hardworking as him 💔

Incidentally, Dimitrov has been riddled with injury problems, and what is shocking is that he has had to retire due to injury from the last five Grand Slams. His run of struggles with injuries started exactly a year earlier when he was forced to retire in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2024.
Then, he retired at the quarterfinals stage at the 2024 US Open, followed by a first-round retirement at the 2025 Australian Open, and the first round of the 2025 French Open prior to his latest setback yesterday. Since the start of the 2020 season, Dimitrov’s 12 injury retirements is the most among all ATP players.
