Mirra Andreeva Starstruck by Roger Federer During Wimbledon Win – “It’s Been My Dream to See You”

Andreeva holds focus on Centre Court amid the Federer surprise at the Wimbledon R16.

The 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva delivered a composed performance to beat 10th seed Emma Navarro in straight sets, but it was the presence of Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion, in the Royal Box that nearly threw her off more than anything happening on court.

Andreeva admitted she got nervous after spotting the 20-time Grand Slam champion mid-match but kept her cool to seal a 6-2, 6-3 win. So focused was she, in fact, that she didn’t realize she’d already won.

Federer Watches On, Andreeva Holds Her Nerve

Playing her first-ever match on Centre Court, Andreeva showed few signs of nerves against last year’s quarterfinalist Emma Navarro. The Russian teen took early leads in both sets and never looked back, closing out the fourth-round clash in just over an hour. But even as she cruised through the scoreboard, her focus was briefly tested by the sight of Federer sitting alongside wife Mirka in the Royal Box.

Andreeva said post-match, “I was super nervous before playing for the first time on the center court. I really tried my best to not look over there in the box because I knew that as soon as I would look there, I would just completely lose my focus.”

“When I saw, I got really, really nervous, but I’m just super happy that I managed to keep playing focused.” Andreeva added, “I saw Roger and (his wife) Mirka and it means a lot that you came and watched my match. It has been one of my dreams to see you in real life. Just wanted to say real quick, Mirka, you look very pretty. I really like your outfit.”

Andreeva had named Federer just two days earlier as one of the three people she’d love to see courtside, alongside Ryan Gosling and Andy Murray. The wish came true during her Centre Court debut, and she managed to hold her nerve despite the distraction.

There was another unexpected twist at the finish. After match point, Andreeva casually walked back to the baseline, thinking the match was still on. Navarro had to come to the net before the teenager realized the contest was over.

In her on-court interview, Andreeva explained the incident with a laugh, stating, “I kept telling myself I’m not the one who is up on the score, I am the one who is down. That helped me to stay focused and in the end I completely forgot the score.”
