Taylor Fritz advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the third time in his career on Sunday after Jordan Thompson was forced to retire due to injury. The Australian, struggling with back pain and heavy strapping on his right leg, stopped play while trailing 6-1, 3-0 on No. 1 Court, handing Fritz a swift passage into the final eight.

Fritz Moves On, Thompson’s Dream Run Ends in Pain

It was a disappointing end to what had been a gritty run for Jordan Thompson, who had come through back-to-back five-set battles before outlasting Luciano Darderi in four sets in the third round. The 31-year-old, who was playing in the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time, had already spoken earlier in the week about pushing through the pain of injury. Unfortunately, on Sunday, his body gave out.

Taylor Fritz stated, as per the ATP website, “It is not the way I want to go through. I was really excited to play Jordan today. I was excited to play some good tennis and it is just sad. He has been battling. He has been playing five setters. He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday, so he has been battling out here and respect to him for coming out. His body is not right, so I feel bad for him and hope he feels better.”

Fritz, the fifth seed, had a demanding path to the fourth round, surviving a five-setter against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opener and edging past Gabriel Diallo in another marathon. He then took out Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets. After spending nearly 10 hours on court across his first three matches, he took just 40 minutes to get past Thompson.

Fritz to Face Khachanov in Quarterfinal Clash

Next up for Fritz is 21st seed Karen Khachanov, who breezed past Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. The 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinalist rallied from 2-5 down in the fifth set against Nuno Borges earlier in the week and now boasts an 8-2 grass record this season, including a semifinal showing in Halle. Against Majchrzak, Khachanov broke serve six times and tallied 44 winners to just 21 unforced errors in a tidy hour and 48 minutes.
