British No. 1 set for stern test against crafty Czech opponent
British No. 1 Emma Raducanu is set for a second-round match against unseeded Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon. Raducanu cruised past wildcard Mimi Xu in straight sets to open her campaign, while Vondrousova took down 32nd seed McCartney Kessler in a straight-sets win that featured a tight second-set tiebreak.

Raducanu’s season has lacked consistency, with quarterfinal runs in Miami and Queen’s standing out amid mostly early exits. Her latest setback came in Eastbourne, where she lost to Maya Joint in a tight three-setter. In 30 matches, she’s hit 82 aces with a 62.9% first-serve win rate, 46% return points won, and 52% break point conversion rate.

Vondrousova’s year has been disrupted by injuries, missing the Australian Open and withdrawing from Rome. Still, she’s shown flashes of form, reaching the Abu Dhabi quarterfinals and recently winning the Berlin title over Xinyu Wang. In 18 matches, she’s served 68 aces, winning 67.5% on first serve, 47% on return, and converting 54.1% of break points.

Marketa Vondrousova holds a 2-1 edge in her head-to-head against Emma Raducanu. Their rivalry began at Wimbledon 2021, where a teenage Raducanu stunned the Czech in straight sets. But Vondrousova has since turned the tide, claiming back-to-back straight-set wins, first in the 2022 BJK Cup and then again in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Abu Dhabi | Round of 32 | Marketa Vondrousova | 6–3, 6–4 |
| 2022 | BJK Cup Qualifiers | Round 1 | Marketa Vondrousova | 6–1, 6–1 |
| 2021 | Wimbledon | Round of 64 | Emma Raducanu | 6–2, 6–4 |
| Emma Raducanu | Category | Marketa Vondrousova |
| 40 | Current Ranking | 73 |
| 135-75 | Career W-L | 287-126 |
| 16-13 | YTD W-L | 11-5 |
| 1 | Career Titles | 3 |
| 1 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 0 | YTD Titles | 1 |
Vondrousova holds the head-to-head edge and comes in with the confidence of a Berlin title. While Raducanu has shown glimpses of form, her inconsistency and recent loss to Maya Joint raise concerns. If Vondrousova stays fit, she should have the edge in this matchup.

At 1/2, Marketa Vondrousova is the clear favorite, backed by recent form and a stronger all-court game. Raducanu, at 8/5, offers underdog value but comes with risk given her patchy season.
