‘You Are Lacking Intensity’ – Novak Djokovic Calls Out Aryna Sabalenka in Hilarious Exchange Ahead of Wimbledon 2025

A surprise press-room cameo by Djokovic turns Sabalenka’s media day into lighthearted fun.

In a lighthearted yet telling moment ahead of Wimbledon 2025, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic crashed Aryna Sabalenka’s pre-tournament press conference, sparking a playful exchange between two of tennis’s biggest personalities.

The World No. 1 on the WTA Tour was mid-session at the All England Club when Djokovic, unannounced and clearly in good spirits, strolled in and launched into a cheeky roast that had the room laughing.

In reference to their practice together earlier on, Sabalenka asked Nole, “What do you think about hitting with me? How do you see my level? Am I good?”

Djokovic responded with his dry humor and wit, “I think you have the potential. You’re a really talented player. You have nice strokes, good technique. Can I be honest? You’re lacking intensity on the court. You don’t have enough intensity. It’s too flat. You’ve got to lighten up a little bit, put some power in it.”

Rallies, Roasts, and Respect: A Wimbledon Warm-Up

Both Sabalenka and Djokovic had just wrapped a joint practice session, which Sabalenka described as a rare and meaningful experience. But it wasn’t all serious. The two added some fun with a playful $100 bet on hitting a can placed on the other’s side of the court. Djokovic won the first round, but Sabalenka evened the score by hitting it on her second try.

Afterwards, during the press conference, Sabalenka was asked about her experience with practicing with Nole, to which Sabalenka said, “Novak is the best. First of all, I was able to hit with him, which not every guy would be able to do. Then you can chat with him. He will give his honest advice. It’s amazing to hear the opinion of such a legend.”

The Belarusian added how much she appreciated the advice from the tennis legend: “If you give Novak an opportunity to talk, he’s not going to stop,” she said with a smile. “I wish I could stay there for four hours and just keep chatting. We were just chatting about stuff that I’m kind of struggling with a little bit. I’m really thankful for the advice he gave me.”

Following Djokovic’s jab about her intensity, Sabalenka took it in stride, responding with a laugh, “Before this guy was my favorite player, but not anymore, obviously.”

The banter didn’t end there. Djokovic, ever the showman, asked, “How would you introduce me on the court, please?” prompting Sabalenka to grab the emcee microphone for a mock introduction before eventually exiting the room.

Before the press conference fully shifted focus, Sabalenka gave Djokovic another nod of respect, calling him “the best player of the world.” Djokovic, grinning, replied, “Thank you. That’s a nice way to start a press conference.”

Does Aryna Sabalenka actually lack intensity?

Much like Novak Djokovic’s unrelenting intensity, Aryna Sabalenka brings a similar brand of sheer power and ferocity to the court. While they might be chasing different titles this fortnight, their easy banter off-court revealed a genuine mutual respect, and a little humor never hurts.

A classic baseliner, Sabalenka’s game is built on a foundation of aggressive hitting and control, relentlessly dictating points to unleash a barrage of winners. She boasts a formidable serve that can hit speeds up to 200 km/h (124 mph), backed up by equally potent groundstrokes from both wings.

This raw power translates into a ton of free points; in 2023 alone, she hammered 401 aces, ranking her third among all players. However, with great power comes a great number of double faults. Her all-out approach means she can be prone to errors, as evidenced by her 166 double faults in 2020, more than any other player that year.

I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
