Derik Queen was selected as the 13th pick in first round of the 2025 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. However, he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans right after it. The former Maryland Terrapins’ power forward/ center, began his basketball journey at Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore. However, following his freshman season, he transferred to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida.

He had a decent sophomore season, which ultimately ended in Montverde’s upset defeat in the quarterfinals of the 2023 GEICO Nationals. However, in his junior year, the 20-year-old received an honorable MaxPreps Junior All-American mention.

For college, Queen committed to play for Terrapins, after narrowing down his options to Maryland, Indiana, Kansas and Houston. Following his college freshman season, the Baltimore native was a first-team All-Big Ten selection, as well as the winner of the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Queen picked up basketball ever since he was a young kid. Right from his kindergarten, he followed a strict routine and honed his skills.
