Retirement nears as Cirstea reflects on a journey shaped by breakthroughs and competition.
Sorana Cirstea confirmed that the 2026 season will mark the end of her career, closing a run that began in 2006 and spanned nearly every corner of the WTA landscape. The 35 year old Romanian revealed her decision on Saturday through her Instagram, explaining how she reached a point where longevity and realism converged.
Cirstea described her mindset plainly. “I love tennis. I love the discipline, the routines, the hard work. The competition and the adrenaline fuel my soul,” she wrote. “But like everything in life, it must come to an end.” After a year in which she stayed competitive with a 30-20 record, she will play one more full season before stepping away.

Cirstea’s announcement follows a late-career revival that reestablished her as a fixture in main draws. Her 2025 season featured a singles title run in Cleveland, semifinal finishes in Iasi and Osaka and a year-end ranking of No. 43. The turnaround held extra weight because it came after her recovery from plantar fasciitis and subsequent surgery. That comeback also carried her into doubles success, where she partnered with Anna Kalinskaya to win the Mutua Madrid Open.
Her rise began long before this resurgence. Cirstea turned pro in 2006 and soon carved out space on the Tour, reaching her first major quarterfinal at the 2009 French Open as a 19 year old. She returned to the same stage 14 years later at the 2023 US Open. She collected her first singles title in Tashkent 17 years ago, added Istanbul in 2021 and lifted her third trophy this past August. At her peak in 2013, she reached a career high of No. 21 while making a run to the Toronto final.

Across nearly 20 seasons, Cirstea finished inside the Top 100 in all but one year since 2008, a level of reliability that made her one of the Tour’s enduring presences. Reflecting on the span of her tenure, she admitted the mileage surprised even her. “I never expected to compete for such a long time, but the last couple of years have been my happiest on court and they just kept me going,” she wrote. “That being said, I have now decided that 2026 will be my last year on tour.”

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
