Eagles Convert False Start Tush Push against the Packers after Green Bay Tried to Get It Banned in the Offseason!

Devavrat Kulkarni

For all the offensive players on the Philadelphia Eagles roster, who had a score to settle against the Green Bay Packers, last night provided them with their first chance to do so.

What we are talking about here is the Eagles’ extremely successful yet now highly controversial ‘Tush Push’ play that could have been banned this offseason. Leading the charge for the ban were the Packers, who submitted an official proposal citing injury concerns as the main reason.

Nevertheless, the ‘Tush Push’ survived, and the Eagles wasted no time in extracting their revenge. On a third-and-one play, Philly ran the play and got away with what was a clear offside.

Why the Packers Submitted a Proposal to Ban the play?

During the offseason, team owners met to decide on some of the rules they wanted to enforce ahead of this season. Amongst them, there was a proposal put forth by the Packers to ban the ‘Tush Push’ play run quite successfully by the Philadelphia Eagles

According to the report submitted by Green Bay, the main reason they cited for the ban was the risk of injury to the players. Former Eagles center Jason Kelce was the spokesperson on behalf of the Eagles, and he answered all questions team owners had about the play. Eventually, 22 owners voted for the ban, but that was 2 short of the 24 votes needed for the ban to go through.

However, news has come out that multiple sources from the NFL front office acknowledged that it was the league that asked the Packers to submit the proposal. The Packers’ head coach had also mentioned that, apart from safety concerns, the play doesn’t look like a football play; it looks more like a rugby scrum.

Eagles Defense Trolls Packers with Tush Push Celebration in the Endzone

Irrespective of the fact that there may or may not be injury concerns attached to the play, the ‘Tush Push’ has garnered quite a bit of negativity this season as slow-motion replays show Philadelphia jumping offside on most of those plays.

Last night, the Eagles got away with an obvious one once again. Therefore, there is a great chance that this play will come under scrutiny once more in the upcoming offseason.

While Green Bay submitted the proposal to ban the play earlier, their newest member, pass rusher Micah Parsons, also showed his disapproval after Week 6 when the Eagles’ guards jumped offside against the Giants.

“I hate that play,” said Parsons after the Week 6 game. “That might come (back) and bite me one day.” And as expected, sure enough, the Eagles ran the play successfully last night against Parsons and the Packers.

Not wanting to miss out, the Eagles’ defense took things a step further. They ran their version of the ‘Tush Push’ in the endzone, trolling the Packers’ fans cheering from the stands.

The future of the play remains unknown, but for now, it exists, and Philly will make use of it every time they get the chance. It is still up to the teams to try and stop it. Controversy or no controversy, the Eagles continue to enjoy a high rate of success, and until now, no team has been able to successfully stop them on multiple attempts.

After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
