‘I Know They Got My Back’ – J.J. McCarthy Gets Emotional after Leading Vikings to a Win Over the Lions in First Game Back from Injury!

The Minnesota Vikings pulled off a well-deserved 27-24 victory over divisional rivals, the Detroit Lions, on Sunday. This matchup was one of the more important ones for the Vikings, who remain in last place in the NFC North despite their win.

Minnesota may still be last in its division, but the victory over Detroit not only meant that the team is 4-4 and still within reach of mounting a challenge for a place in the postseason. Leading the way was second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who started just his third game of the season after missing five games due to a right high-ankle sprain.

McCarthy Emotional in Post Game Press Conference

After being drafted into the NFL in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, former Michigan Wolverine signal-caller J.J. McCarthy has endured a torrid time at the professional level of football.

Missing out on his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee during preseason, McCarthy made his NFL debut under center in the Vikings’ Week 1 win over the Chicago Bears. Little did he know that in just the second game of the season, he would suffer yet another injury that would sideline him for five games again this season.

In the Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons, McCarthy suffered a high-ankle sprain that caused him to miss the next 5 games as he watched from the sidelines. Sunday’s win over the Lions was thus an emotional moment for the youngster as he reflected on how he missed being on the field playing with his teammates.

Asked at the post-game interview about his reaction in the locker room following the game, McCarthy took time to collect himself before answering as he fought back the tears.

“It was awesome,” said McCarthy. “Yeah, just when you’re hurt, you know, being on IR last year and being out for five weeks, it absolutely kills me not being out there with those guys, cuz I love every single one of them. And you know, I know they got my back and I got theirs the rest of the way.”

McCarthy’s Performance against the Lions

In what was just his third start of his career in the NFL, McCarthy had yet another decent performance. Having missed so many games in his first couple of seasons in the league, the 22-year-old hasn’t really had the time to get acquainted with the professional level of football.

Having said that, McCarthy was instrumental in the win over the Lions, even if his numbers weren’t jaw-dropping by any means. The second-year quarterback finished the game with 143 passing yards, which is nothing impressive, but he had 3 total touchdowns in the game, of which 2 were through the air and one along the ground.

More importantly, he has led the team to wins in both the games he finished this season and has the backing of his teammates and the coaching staff to further develop into the team’s long-term franchise quarterback. Up next for the Minnesota Vikings is a tough match against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 10.
