Top stars return to Wuhan as Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Gauff headline a stacked WTA 1000 draw.
A highlight of the women’s tennis calendar, the Wuhan Open, officially the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open for sponsorship, returns with its eighth edition in 2025. This year’s tournament kicks off with qualifying rounds on October 4 and 5, before the main draw gets underway on Monday, October 6, running through to the final on October 12. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Wuhan, Hubei, the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre will once again host the action on its signature outdoor hard courts.
The field features 56 singles competitors and 28 doubles teams, all vying for glory and ranking points. Aryna Sabalenka, the tournament’s three-time defending champion, will be back to defend her crown, adding extra intrigue to the competition. In the first quarter, three-time Wuhan champion Aryna Sabalenka begins her campaign against the winner of Rebecca Sramkova and Anna Kalinskaya, marking her first match in over a month. A possible quarterfinal with eighth seed Elena Rybakina looms large, a rematch of their Cincinnati Open clash where Rybakina prevailed in straight sets. Naomi Osaka (No. 11) will look to rebound after an early China Open exit, starting against Leylah Fernandez, her nemesis from the 2021 US Open.

Also in the first quarter are Liudmila Samsonova (No. 16) and rising star Linda Noskova, whose recent run to the China Open final makes her a dangerous outsider. The second quarter features a strong American presence, headlined by No. 4 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula, who could meet in a high-stakes quarterfinal. Pegula’s first-round clash with Emma Raducanu promises sparks, recalling their titanic encounter in Beijing. Meanwhile, Canada’s Victoria Mboko faces a test against No. 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova after a wrist injury limited her summer season.
The third quarter could see a thrilling clash between third seed Coco Gauff and fifth seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarters. Gauff starts against Wang Xinyu or a qualifier, while Andreeva faces Laura Siegemund or Dayana Yastremska. Early matches to watch here include Emma Navarro vs. Zhang Shuai and Karolina Muchova vs. Marta Kostyuk. The fourth quarter is anchored by reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek (No. 2), who will face Marie Bouzkova or Camila Osorio. Jasmine Paolini (No. 7) sits in the same section alongside Clara Tauson (No. 10) and Belinda Bencic (No. 13), setting the stage for potential upsets.
